Superchargers battle to protect the home fort against Rockets

  • Northern Superchargers are slightly weaker on the bowling front and depend too much on Adil Rashid
  • Trent Rockets have Alex Hales, Joe Root, and Colin Munro in good form and this would make them confident
  • Trent Rockets’ bowling attack would suit these conditions, and this is an advantage for the side

The Northern Superchargers would be playing their first home game in The Hundred, 2022 as they take on Trent Rockets at Headingly. Both sides have made good starts to the tournament. The Superchargers defeated the Manchester Originals in their opening game of the season. The Trent Rockets overcame a massive challenge against the Birmingham Phoenix in their last game.

We expect this to be a tough contest as there isn’t much to choose between the two teams. The Trent Rockets had won the game between the two sides last year and they would look to draw inspiration from that win. The Rockets have a strong batting line-up, and it remains to be seen if the Superchargers are up to the task with the ball on a flat wicket at Headingley.

Northern Superchargers Preview

It was a clinical run chase for Faf du Plessis’ side in the last game against the Manchester Originals. They were always ahead of the asking rate and finished the game with six balls to spare and six wickets in hand. It would be a tougher contest for the side against the Trent Rockets and du Plessis who likes leading from the front shall look for the second consecutive win.

Adam Lyth played a match-winning knock in the last game, and he would like to set up a strong opening wicket stand with du Plessis. The middle order is formidable with Michael-Kyle Pepper, Harry Brook, and David Willey being hard hitters of the ball. They would have to take on the strong bowling attack that the Rockets have. Adam Hose and David Wiese are clean hitters, and they shall look to add quick runs.

Their bowling attack would be up against a major challenge in this game. David Willey and Matty Potts have to use the new ball well and put pressure on the Rockets. Adil Rashid looks in good form and this would add to their confidence. Dwayne Bravo, Wiese, and Roelof van der Merwe will have to bowl tighter lines in this game for the side to win.

Northern Superchargers Predicted Playing XI:

Faf du Plessis (c), Adam Lyth, Harry Brook, Michael-Kyle Pepper (wk), David Willey, Adam Hose, David Wiese, Roelof van der Merwe, Dwayne Bravo, Adil Rashid, Matty Potts

Trent Rockets Preview

Lewis Gregory would be happy with the way his side started in the tournament. The six-wicket win against Birmingham Phoenix in the last game would add to the side’s confidence. It came against one of the strongest sides and Gregory would look to maintain this momentum. They defeated the Superchargers last year and shall aim to repeat the same show.

Alex Hales looked at his best and he would like to set up a big opening wicket stand with Dawid Malan. Joe Root and Colin Munro scored runs in the middle order, and they need to build partnerships with Tom Kohler-Cadmore. Rockets have depth in their batting with Gregory, Samit Patel, and Daniel Sams to follow and these players shall look to play important cameos.

Luke Wood came up with a good show in the last game and he must strike early along with Matthew Carter. Daniel Sams was brilliant, but Rashid Khan was expensive by his standards and shall look to make improvements. Gregory and Samit Patel are smart bowlers, and they would aim to make use of their experience.

Trent Rockets Predicted Playing XI:

Lewis Gregory (c), Dawid Malan, Tom Kohler-Cadmore (wk), Alex Hales, Joe Root, Colin Munro, Rashid Khan, Matthew Carter, Daniel Sams, Samuel Cook, Luke Wood

Weather Conditions

There would be clear skies over Leeds on August 9. It is a flat surface where batsmen can play their strokes. The ball comes to the bat nicely and bowlers have little margin for error. The side that bats first here would look to have 150 runs on the board to put pressure on the opposition.

Venue Details

Headingley, Leeds is a run-scoring venue. The wicket is flat here and the ball comes onto the bat nicely. The outfield is fast which increases the run-scoring opportunity for the batsmen. There is early assistance for the fast bowlers on this surface. Spinners have to vary their pace and length to do well at this venue.

Toss: To Bowl

This is a high-scoring venue and we have seen big run chases in the past. This format of the game makes it challenging for the sides to put runs on the board and defend it. Only once has a side defended a score successfully this year. Hence, we believe the side winning the toss in this game would bowl first.

There would be pressure on the Northern Superchargers to win this home game. The team has a few problems up its sleeves in the bowling department. Their bowlers would have to get their lines spot-on to win this game. The Rockets are a balanced team and have depth in batting as well as bowling departments. This will be a close contest, but we would have our money on the Trent Rockets.
