We are into the 47th game of the Royal London One-Day Cup, 2021 and Northamptonshire take on Worcestershire at their home ground County Ground, Northampton. Northamptonshire come here after suffering a loss against Kent while Worcestershire went down against Derbyshire in their last game.

Worcestershire has lost all the five games the side has played, and this would put them under a lot of pressure in this game. Northamptonshire also has had their problems with consistency, and they can’t afford to lose this game. A win in this game would put the side in the reckoning for a place in the quarterfinal and the side would be aiming for that here.

Northamptonshire Preview

Consistency has been the problem for Will Young’s side this season. With two wins in five games the side is sitting 5th on the points table. They went down by 4 wickets in their last game against Kent owing to a poor show with the bat. The side would like to make a strong comeback here and play we all as their opponents are looking weak.

Ricardo Vasconcelos and Emilio Gay provided a good start in the last game and the pair shall look for a similar performance here. Young must do well at No. 3 and add runs with Saif Zaib and Rob Keogh as the trio has failed to show consistency. Lewis McManus, James Sales, and Nathan Buck shall have to do the big-hitting in the final overs of the game to put the side in a commanding position.

Ben Sanderson has done well with the ball, and he shall have to strike early in the game with Nathan Buck. Alex Russell has been doing well and the side would expect to see tight spells from him and Brandon Glover in the middle overs. Saif Zaib and Rob Keogh add variety to the bowling attack.

Northamptonshire Predicted Playing XI:

Will Young (c), Ricardo Vasconcelos, Emilio Gay, Saif Zaib, Rob Keogh, Lewis McManus (wk), James Sales, Nathan Buck, Brandon Glover, Ben Sanderson, Alex Russell

Worcestershire Preview

It has been a disastrous performance from Jake Libby’s side in the tournament. They have lost all the five games the side has played. The side went down by 47 runs in the last game they played against Derbyshire. They are almost out of contention for a place in the quarterfinal and Libby would be aiming for the first win in this game.

Ed Pollock and Taylor Cornall haven’t done well, and the side shall need a good show from them in this game. Libby hit a hundred in the last game, and this would make him confident. He needs to add runs in the middle order with Azhar Ali and Ed Barnard in this game to put the side in a good position. Ben Cox is an experienced player, and he would look to add quick runs with Henry Cullen.

Their bowling attack had a poor outing in the last game and the team would expect better spells from Joe Leach and Ben Gibbson in this game. Dillon Pennington and Adam Finch must bowl better lines in the middle overs. The side would also expect a better show from the likes of Jake Libby and Cornall as most of them have been inconsistent.

Worcestershire Predicted Playing XI:

Jake Libby (c), Ed Pollock, Azhar Ali, Taylor Cornall, Ed Barnard, Ben Cox (wk), Henry Cullen, Joe Leach, Ben Gibbon, Dillon Pennington, Adam Finch

Weather Conditions

The skies over Northampton would be overcast on August 17 and this might offer some assistance to the bowlers. The surface is expected to be a good one to bat on and the ball would come onto the bat nicely. The side batting first in this game shall aim to put 300 runs or more on the surface.

Venue Details

County Ground, Northampton has a small outfield, and batsmen have always enjoyed batting on this surface. Fast bowlers who swing the ball do well at this venue in the early overs of the game. Spinners need to use their variations as the small size of the venue makes life difficult for them.

Toss: To Bowl

In the two games that have been played here this season, the sides chasing the score have won games. It has been a difficult wicket at the start, but the conditions have become better as the game has progressed.  Hence, the side that wins the toss in this game would like to take advantage of the conditions and bowl first.

It has been a miserable campaign for Worcestershire, and they would be looking to salvage lost pride. Their batsmen have been in poor form and haven’t scored too many runs this season.  Northamptonshire on the other hand still has a chance of making it to the next round. They play at home, and this would make them favorites to win here.
