The 2023 Vitality Blast has just begun, and plenty of exciting contests await us. The latest edition of England’s premier domestic T20 competition kicked off on the 20th of May with the Derbyshire Falcons taking on the Lancashire Lightning at Edgbaston. Lancashire won the match by 4 wickets. Derbyshire will next clash with the Nottinghamshire Outlaws at Trent Bridge on the 26th of May.
Last season, the Nottinghamshire Outlaws missed out on qualification for the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast for the first time since 2015. To push their chances this season, they have roped in Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who will give their bowling unit a much-needed boost. Shaheen will join Colin Munro as one of the club's two T20 overseas players.
Colin Munro, the Kiwi batter who was part of the Trent Rockets side that won The Hundred last season, is expected to play a key role in Nottinghamshire’s batting unit. The opening batter is an accomplished T20 opener, with 9493 runs in 357 T20 innings at an average of 30.52. He has 5 hundreds and a whopping 55 fifties in the format.
The Notts will, however, miss the services of last season’s top run-getter, Ben Duckett, who’s busy with Ashes duty. In his absence, Tom Moores will look to step up. Last season, Moores scored 266 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 143.78.
Opener Alex Hales may not have had a great season in this year’s PSL (he managed 137 runs in 6 innings), but he’s a game-changer and will be looking forward to making an impact. He had a wonderful time in the Blast last year, collecting 374 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 193.78.
On the bowling front, the Notts will be banking on last season’s highest wicket-taker Jake Ball to do the job along with Shaheen Afridi.

Derbyshire Falcons have started their 2023 Vitality Blast campaign with a 4-wicket loss to Lancashire. After batting first, Derbyshire posted a healthy 179-5 on the board on a good batting wicket at Edgbaston. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and Lancashire polished off the target with four balls to spare.
For Derbyshire, the main problem was that many batters got starts but couldn’t convert it into a substantial score. Wayne Madsen was the highest scorer with a fine 50 off 35 balls.
This year, Derbyshire have added Matt Lamb and 22-year-old Haider Ali to bolster their batting. Ali might have been dismissed for a duck in the first match, but he is an exciting prospect who can deliver destructive performances at the top of the innings. He has an experience of 101 T20 games behind him and might well change Derbyshire’s fortunes this year.
Captain Leus du Plooy, who smashed 33 off 16 balls in the first match, looked in great touch and we are backing him to play a big knock soon.
Derbyshire are also hoping that young Pakistan pacer Zaman Khan, who regularly clocks 90mph, adds potency to their bowling unit. George Scrimshaw was their leading wicket-taker last season, taking 23 wickets in 15 innings at an economy of 9.07 and a strike-rate of 22. We are backing him to have another solid season with the Falcons.

The pitch at the Trent Bridge stadium in Nottingham is usually a batting beauty, with very little assistance for the bowlers. This will be a fresh pitch, so the ball should come on nicely to the bat. Batters can start hitting the ball from very early as they can trust the bounce of this wicket.
The weather in Nottingham during the day of the match is expected to be partly cloudy and pleasant.
The average score batting first at Trent Bridge in T20s is 166. Last season, the highest total posted at the venue was a colossal 261-2 by Birmingham Bears. Totals above 200 were achieved on three occasions here in the 2022 Blast. The team batting first in this match must look to set a target of around 190-200 runs.
The team batting first has won 54% of the matches played at Trent Bridge in T20 cricket. This will be the first match of the season to be played at the venue. The team batting first is expected to bat first.
Nottinghamshire Outlaws hold a 26-7 head-to-head record against Derbyshire Falcons. Moreover, Derbyshire haven’t beaten Nottinghamshire once in their last five encounters. Nottinghamshire will hence have the edge in the match, even more as they are playing at home. The Notts have more power in their batting, and with Shaheen, they now have added potency in their bowling. Derbyshire’s batting looks decent enough on paper, but remains to be seen whether they perform. Their bowling looks a little thin and might go for runs on this batting pitch.
Expect Nottinghamshire Outlaws to emerge victorious.
