After losing Shikhar Dhawan early in a rain-reduced match in the 2nd ODI, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav got India back on track with an unbeaten 66 runs partnership before rain stopped play.

Gill is looking in great touch while Suryakumar Yadav is enjoying the best of his form. These two would be knocking at the door for World Cup selections.

With less than a year left for the next ODI World Cup, both New Zealand and India would be aiming at finding the right XI in the 50-overs format. The 3rd and final ODI of the series at Hagley Oval will be crucial from India’s point of view.

The bowlers who showed great promise will get help from the grass pitch here. A balanced contest between bat and ball is expected. And as such, this match presents a good opportunity to test the current squad's strength.

New Zealand Preview

Kane Williamson will be happy with his own performance to begin with. He has struggled in the shortest format of the game and as expected made a good comeback as the ODI series kicked off in Auckland.

The skipper did what he is known for. And along with the reliable Tom Latham in the middle order stitched a match-winning partnership. The conditions in Christchurch would be different.

Both teams will be tested as the bowlers have a good chance here to bounce back. Matt Henry seems to be making his mark in the side. He bowled brilliantly on a difficult pitch in Auckland and was once again impressive in the 2nd ODI.

He will be a key bowler to watch out for along with Tim Southee. Michael Bracewell replaced Milne in the last game and though he is a good prospect in the batting department, his bowling skills may not be good enough against India.

His presence in the side adds depth to the batting order but as a fifth bowler, New Zealand may find themselves in trouble. It would suit the Blackcaps better to stick with Adam Milne for the last game.

Milne and Ferguson are the most likely to be expensive. There is great pace but a lack of consistency in their line and lengths makes the captain’s job difficult at times.

Finn Allen, Devon Conway, and Glenn Phillips need to adapt to this format quickly. New Zealand may be entertaining ideas of including these batters in the ODI squad for the future.

One of these players is likely to come good in the 3rd and final ODI of the series and deliver an impactful innings.

New Zealand Predicted Playing XI:

Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson (c), Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (wk), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson

New Zealand Actual Playing XI:

Mitchell Santner, Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Matt Henry, Finn Allen, Adam Milne, Kane Williamson, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Glenn Phillips

India Preview

Shikhar Dhawan seems to have one job left. Lead the upcoming players in ODI or T20I series when the regulars aren’t available.

The southpaw opener wasn’t part of the last two T20 World Cups and is highly unlikely to be in the 2023 World Cup. Gill’s form will be crucial and India would keep an eye out for the Gujarat Titans batsman.

He can potentially replace KL Rahul at the top if he delivers consistently. Sanju Samson is another batsman who’s been a hot topic for quite some time now.

In the 2nd ODI, he was dropped from the side and Deepak Hooda got a chance to feature in the XI. The Indian management has shown faith in Hooda recently and seems like they would continue to do so.

Dropping Samson makes sense given the position in the batting order he was sent to bat in. If Rishabh Pant’s poor run of form continues, India should have another option. And DK will not be in the list of contenders for the ODI World Cup.

Sanju Samson needs more games consistently and similar support that India has shown Pant or other players. India’s strength in this lineup is the top order of Gill, Iyer, and Suryakumar.

These three are in sublime form and will be the key players for India. Deepak Chahar is back in the side and along with Arshdeep Singh can pick up early wickets with his swing bowling.

India Predicted Playing XI:

Shikhar Dhawan (c), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

India Actual Playing XI:

YS Chahal, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Chahar, Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Rishabh Pant, Deepak Hooda, Shikhar Dhawan

Weather Conditions

The pitch offers pace and bounce for the bowlers. And since the bounce is consistent, batters can also benefit from the pitch. There is grass on the pitch and it will help the pacers to swing the ball and trouble the batters more often. It is expected to rain in Christchurch on the match day.

Venue Details

Hagley Oval in Christchurch will be the venue for the 3rd and final ODI of the series. The average 1st innings score on this ground is 247 runs. The boundaries here are small in size and the batters will look to take advantage of that.

Toss: To Bat

Of the total 22 ODI matches played at this venue, teams batting first and second have won 11 matches each. While there’s no clear advantage for the team batting first or second, the highest total chased here is 275 runs. As such, teams would be more comfortable having runs on the board and backing the bowlers to defend it.

New Zealand will start with the home advantage against the visitors. India pack a promising bowling attack with players who are effective with the new ball. New Zealand’s familiarity with the ground and conditions is a major factor in their favour. India’s in-form batters promise an exciting contest if the rain gods are kind this time around. New Zealand with a stronger overall squad and the home advantage start as favourites in our match prediction.

Our prediction is for New Zealand to win the match
