It will be the least awaited game of the ICC World T20 2024. After losing their first two games, New Zealand will face Papua New Guinea in Group C. The bottom-placed teams will play the 39th game of the WT20 at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on 17th June, from 8 pm onwards. After Afghanistan secured a win against PNG at the same venue, both NZ & PNG are out of the Super 8 stage contention and hence from the T20 World Cup.
New Zealand is having a horrendous start to the ICC WT20 2024. In a crucial game against West Indies, New Zealand restricted the hosts to 149 for the loss of 9 wickets. Kiwi pacer trio, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Lockie Ferguson took 7 wickets collectively. The New Zealand top-order couldn’t play spin well and lost four of their first five wickets to spin on 63. Glenn Phillips (40) & Mitchell Santner (21*) showed some resistance at the end. But they fell short of 13 runs. This was New Zealand’s back-to-back defeat in the ongoing World Cup.
In their third game of the tournament, Papua New Guinea scored just 95 runs against Afghanistan. PNG wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga scored 27 off 32 balls. New Guinea made the chase interesting after bowlers Alei Nao & Semo Kamea sent the Afghani openers back very cheaply. But they couldn’t capitalize on the earlier success and lost the game by 7 wickets. This was PNG’s third straight loss of the tournament.
For Group C, New Zealand is currently in the third position with 2 points while Papua New Guinea is the fifth place without a point. This will be the first time both teams play against each other in T20Is.

Kiwis will be disheartened after having an early exit from the 2024 World Cup campaign. Kane Williamson will be looking to shuffle the team to give their bench a chance in the final two games of group C. Rachin Ravindra might get a chance to open with Finn Allen. Ravindra has 170 runs in the last 13 games at a strike rate of 144.06. Finn Allen will be the batter to watch out for against PNG. Allen is their second leading run-scorer in T20s since the start of the last year with 565 runs at a strike rate of 160.05.
Kane Williamson can sacrifice his position to Mark Chapman. Dropping Chapman in the second game proved a costly mistake for the Kiwis. Chapman has 775 runs in the last 32 games at a strike rate of above 140. Dwight Mitchell and Glenn Phillips will come in the middle-order. With 58 runs in the first two games, Phillips stands out as the only batter who has shown some intent.
New Zealand should think of bringing Ish Sodhi into the setup. Sodhi has 25 wickets since the start of the last year at an economy of 7.87. Trent Boult will be the bowler to look out for. He has 5 wickets in the first two games. There won’t be any changes in the NZ pace attack as Boult and Southee are playing their last World Cup. Matt Henry can be tested over Lockie Ferguson. Henry has 15 wickets in the last 11 innings.
Key Players: Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips, Lockie Ferguson.

Just like NZ, PNG will also shuffle their players in their last game of the tournament. Tony Ura & Assad Vala will open the innings for PNG. Ura has 15 runs in the first three games. But he is the leading run-scorer for PNG since 2023. He has 431 runs in 20 games at a strike rate of 141.31 - best amongst the PNG players. He also has hit the highest sixes. Skipper Vala has 429 runs in 18 games while opening the innings with Ura.
Charles Amini will be back in the squad after missing the third game. He averages the highest amongst the PNG batters. Keeper Kiplin Doriga will be the batter to watch out from the PNG camp. Doriga has 66 runs in three games. But his strike rate is below 100. He and Sese Bau are the only two batters who have scored more than 50 runs for PNG. Surprisingly, Bau is the only PNG batter to have a strike rate over 100.
The PNG bowlers have taken 14 wickets in three games. Except Vala, each bowler has conceded less than 6 runs in the first three games. Alei Nao will be the bowler to watch out for. Nao has 4 wickets in three games at an economy of 5.10. Charles Amini will be back in the squad after missing the last game. But looking at the NZ batting lineup, we hardly think that PNG will produce something.
Key Players: Kiplin Doriga, Tony Ura, Assad Vala.

The weather will be partly cloudy. The temperature will range between 25 and 31. The wind will be flowing from the west at 15-25 kmh. The rain is predicted for the three days before the game and on the game day. The pitch at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad typically offers good support to batters. The surface is known for being hard and sporting a decent covering of grass.
The pitch generally offers consistent bounce, which can be exploited by both seamers and spinners. It can be a high-scoring game.
The 26th T20I of the series will be played at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. The venue has a capacity of 15000 spectators and has hosted 4 ODIs & 9 T20Is. In 2023, England recorded the highest total on the ground (267) against the West Indies.
In 9 T20Is, the results have favored the team chasing the target 5 times. But as far as the Men’s cricket is concerned, three victories in the last four games have come while defending the target. The average first innings score at Tarouba is 161. The team winning the toss should bat first.
Though NZ have lost their first two games and are out of the tournament, PNG doesn’t stand a chance to beat them at this level. If New Zealand bats first, we can see a high-scoring game.
We predict that New Zealand will defeat Papua New Guinea.
