The fourth trophy is New Zealand's premier List A competition played amongst six regional teams. Auckland Aces have done well so far to remain in the top two teams halfway past the league stage with 18 points. On the contrary, Otago Volts have still not found form in this competition, losing four of their first six games. Can Auckland Aces win this one and move to the top of the points table?

It has been a very weak performance from Otago Volts so far in the 4th Trophy 2024-25. In the previous season, Otago finished the League stage in the second spot, but lost the eliminator against Auckland Aces and got thrown out of the tournament. In this season, however, in the first six games, they have managed just two wins and there is a real possibility of Volts not even making it to the playoffs this time. Their net run rate is currently at -0.221.
Otago Volts started the season with a huge win against Northern Brave. Defending a big total of 316, they got Northern Brave out for 141. Matthew Bacon and Dean Foxcroft took 3 wickets each to help the Volts to a big win. Sadly this was the highest point for Otago in this season, they lost the next three games to Canterbury Kings, Auckland Aces, and Central Stags, making it three losses in the first four games. The margin of defeats should be a concern as well, since they lost to Canterbury Kings by a huge margin of 240 runs in the second game, followed by a 108-run defeat to Central Stags in their fourth game.
In the previous game against the current opponents, Auckland Aces, Otago Volts batted first to score a good total of 283 for 9. Dale Phillips top-scored with 72 runs, followed by Leo Carter who made a contribution of 62 runs. In defence, the Volts got captain Finn Allen out in the second over, but Michael Sclanders batting at number 4 scored a valuable century to defeat Volts by 4 wickets. Travis Muller took 3 wickets and Matthew Bacon took 2 wickets for Volts.
In the fifth game, Otago registered a confident victory against Wellington Firebirds by 114 runs, but a narrow loss in the previous game against Canterbury Kings, their second of the season against the Kings meant that Otago, after six games, have just two wins to show. Theoretically, they can still make it to the playoffs, but they will have to play out their skin starting from this game to make that happen.

After failing to win the title in the finals against Canterbury Kings in the previous season, Auckland Aces have continued their good performances to be placed second in the points table after six games. They have won four games so far and have earned 18 points with a net run rate of 0.482.
Auckland Aces started the season with a 39-run win against Central Stags, followed by a 4-wicket loss against Wellington Firebirds. Against Central Stags, William O'Donnell scored a valuable century to help Auckland Aces Aces boast a good score in tough batting conditions. James Neesham was the peak of the bowlers with 4 wickets for just 32 runs in 9 overs.
In the next three games, Auckland Aces registered comprehensive wins against Otago Volts by four wickets, against Canterbury Kings, currently at the top of the table, by seven wickets with more than 22 overs remaining, and in the fifth game against Northern Brave by five wickets with about 15 overs to spare. These three comprehensive victories have set up the campaign nicely for Auckland Aces.
In the previous game against the current opponents Otago Volts, Auckland Aces batted brilliantly chasing a tough target of 284. Despite losing three wickets in 16 overs, Michael Sclanders and Jock McKenzie put on a huge partnership of 179 runs to help close the game for Auckland Aces. The Aces did lose their 6th game against Central Stags, but their performances with the bat and ball throughout the season have been top-notch. Auckland Aces should feel confident to defeat Central Stags in this game and should move to the top of the points table.

The weather on the match day at University Oval, Dunedin is expected to be cloudy with a passing morning shower or two. The temperature will range between a high of 16°C and a low of 9°C. No rain is expected as the day progresses. This should be a good day for a one-day game.
The match will be played at University Oval, Dunedin. It is the home ground of the Otago Volts. The ground was built in the late 19th century, but it hosted its first Test match in 2008. Since then, it has hosted many Tests, ODIs, and T20 matches. It was also a venue for the Women’s World Cup. The stadium is small and can hold around 3,500 spectators.
The cool and humid conditions in the morning at University Oval in Dunedin help the seamers early on. The conditions become better to bad as the day goes on. However, in the 3 games that happened here this season, the teams batting first have won all three games. Given this trend, the team winning the toss should bat first here.
Auckland Aces have continued from their good performances in the previous season to maintain the top 2 spot after 6 games in the 4th Trophy 2024-25. Otago Volts, on the other hand, have been underperforming so far and have managed 2 wins in 6 games. In the previous encounter between the two teams, Auckland Aces came on top with a 4-wicket win. Given the current situation, we believe Auckland Aces have an upper hand over Otago Volts in this game.
We predict that Auckland Aces will defeat Otago Volts.
