Pakistan will face West Indies in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Pakistan will enter the contest as favourites, largely because they have been in more than a decent run in the 50-over format in the recent past, where they also secured a series win against Australia while playing at home.

West Indies will be coming in the series as a slight underdog, largely because of missing big-name players.

Both teams have faced off 134 times in the 50-over format where the Caribbean giants have a slight edge with 71 wins compared to 60 victories of the Men-in-Green whereas three matches ended as tie.

Pakistan Preview

The management will be hoping to see the players continue producing similar kinds of performances in the matches to come.

Since the team’s last outing against Kangaroos was a historic one, the management is likely to keep the same combination going forward.

In terms of the batting department, the onus will be on the top-order comprised of captain Babar Azam, in-form opening batter Imam-ul-Haq and hard-hitting Fakhar Zaman to lay down the foundation for the likes of wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed to provide the finishing touches.

The bowling unit looks much better than what it was in the Australia series where the leg-spinner Shadab Khan and left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, who missed the fixtures against the Kangaroos due to injuries, are all set to feature in this series.

Other than them, the pace attack is looking more than decent in the presence of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Shahnawaz Dahani and Hasan Ali.

Pakistan Predicted Playing XI:

Babar Azam (captain), Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Azam Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shahnawaz Dahani, Mohammad Wasim Jnr.

West Indies Preview

The Caribbean giants will be feeling good about themselves as they are coming on the back of winning the three-match ODI series against the Netherlands.

The management will be hoping that the players will be able to continue producing similar kind of performances against a tougher opposition.

However, West Indies players will have a big challenge as they will be playing under extreme conditions in Multan where the weather is expected to be touching mid-40s.

In terms of the batting department, the visitors will be relying on their captain Nicholas Pooran, his deputy and wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope, in-form Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks and hard-hitting Brandon King.

In terms of bowling, the onus will be on all-rounders in the pace department whereas the role of spinners Hayden Walsh and Akeal Hosein will also be crucial in conditions where the pitches are likely to break because of excessive heat.

West Indies Predicted Playing XI:

Shai Hope (wk), Nkrumah Bonner, Shamarh Brooks, Nicholas Pooran (c), Brandon King, Keacy Carty, Kyle Mayers, Alzarri Joseph, Anderson Phillip, Hayden Walsh, Akeal Hosein

Weather Conditions

The wicket prepared foer the game could be excellent for batting unit with no assistance for the bowlers. The weather forecast for Wednesday's game is going to be fair with no sign of rain.

Venue Details

Multan Cricket Stadium is going to host the 1st ODI match between Pakistan and West Indies.

Toss: To Bowl

Both the teams will be looking to win the toss, bat first and post a score in excess of 300 runs. Majority of the one-day games played at Multan have been won by side batting second.

Both teams will be coming in the fixture hoping to start the series on a winning note, especially knowing that there are only three matches to play.

Interestingly, this is only the second time when both teams will face off in the 50-over format in the last five years which is why it will be hard for teams to know exactly what should be expected of the opposition.

On paper at least, Pakistan look a far more solid lineup compared to West Indies who are in a rebuilding phase especially after the departure of the senior pros.

Therefore, the prediction is for the Green Caps to secure a win and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
