The three match ODI series ended a couple of days ago with West Indies women completing a clean sweep. The visitors were simply too good for the hosts, with Hayley Matthews in particular proving her mettle with both bat and ball.
The hosts couldn’t quite compete with the women in maroon in the longer format, but they’ll be hopeful of doing better in the shorter format, as the focus shifts to T20 cricket now.
WI Women have beaten their Pakistani counterparts four times in their most recent five encounters, but 3 of them were too close to call and could have gone either way. The visitors will feel right at home in this format, but the hosts have to bring out their A game to be able to compete and make a fist of it.
If the Pak women play to potential, we might get a few close matches and that’ll make for interesting viewing. However, with Pakistan, you never know which team will turn up on the day.
T20 is often branded as youngster’s game but veterans do have their place in the format. That explains why Nida Dar, the ageing all-rounder and team captain, still remains an integral part of Pakistan’s T20 plans. With a few important weeks ahead, starting with this series and leading up to the T20 world cup later this year, Nida Dar will need to be on top of her game if Pakistan are to go far. She has a solid core of all-rounders like former captain Bismah Maroof, Aliya Raiz and others to turn to though.
The bowling group has several experienced campaigners like Sadia Iqbal, Nashra Sandhu and Diana Baig, and the valuable experience of the all-rounders will also be handy for Pakistan’s bowling plans. The batting doesn’t look as convincing, especially the top order with a few batters still struggling to find their touch.
And that puts added pressure on the middle order to step in and take the team to safety. Against a team like West Indies, who play attacking cricket and give a fair bit of chances, Pakistan women need to be at their very best fielding, and they should be ready to take any opportunity coming their way on the field.

Whether it’s the men’s team or the women’s team, WI will always fancy their chances in the shortest format of the game. But presence of a few marquee players like Stefanie Taylor and Hayley Matthews has turned West Indies women team into series contenders. Their performance against Australia Women in Australia late last year is solid proof of how far this team has come.
A valuable allrounder like Matthews, who can make impact with bat and ball, adds to the balance of the side. It gives other players in the team a free license to play without fear and express their talent in a natural way.
WI have picked a solid squad for this tour that has all bases covered with both bat and ball. Aaliyah Alleyne and Shamilia Connell lead the pace pack whereas right arm offies Hayley Matthews, Karishma Ramharack and budding allrounder Zaida James who bowls left arm offies will be more than handy in the sub-continent pitches.
With the bat, the top order, especially opener Matthews and one-drop batter Stefanie Taylor take it upon themselves to do the bulk of the scoring. Even if they end up failing to see them off, there is enough talent to carry on with the heavy scoring.

As we saw in the ODI series, there’s some runs to be hand if you apply yourselves and are willing to grind it out. We may see scores upwards of 170s in several of these matches if the wickets play true to their nature. And it’ll be a lot hard to contain destructive batters like Matthews and Taylor once they get going. The weather forecast for the game looks good.
All five matches of the T20 series will be played at the National Stadium in Karachi.
Toss does influence results in few games where there’s heavy dew. If that’s going to be the case, it’s always better to chase and make best use of the conditions in the second inning. Chasing will be top priority for the captain winning the toss.
The T20 format suits their style of cricket, and given how balanced their squad is and how destructive their top order can be on their day, West Indies women emerge clear favourites to win this game.
We are backing West Indies Women as winners of this contest.
