Battle to restore pride for PNG versus USA

  • United States of America has won three out of the four games they have played against Papua New Guinea
  • Steven Taylor and Monank Patel are looking in good form with bat for USA and this would add to the side’s confidence

Papua New Guinea haven’t had it great so far in Oman. They have played two ODIs, one against Nepal and the other against the United States and have lost both. The side seems to be lacking the temperament required in this format of the game. United States on the other hand won the last game against PNG convincingly and they would be eying a series win here.

In the last nine ODIs that Papua New Guinea have played the last has failed to register a single win and this is a major problem for the side going into this contest. Most of their players have done poorly and they would be down on confidence. It remains to be seen if the side can surprise its critics with a good show here.

Papua New Guinea Preview

It was an extremely poor show by Assad Vala’s side in the last game where they went down by 7 wickets. The side suffered a batting collapse on a good surface and their bowlers didn’t have much to defend on the board. Vala would like to see better efforts from his players in this contest and aim to earn their first win in 10 games.

Lega Siaka and Tony Ura went out cheaply in the last game and better show would be needed from them at the top. Vala played a captain’s knock, but he would require support from Charles Amini and Sese Bau here. Down the order Kiplin Doriga and Gaudi Toka have big responsibilities considering the form of their top order.

Damien Ravu and Nosaina Pokana have impressed with the new ball and the side would like to see early wickets from them in this game. It is however the rest of the attack they will need to improve their show. Chad Soper, Bau and Charles Amini must bowl in the right areas for the side to pose threat to the United States.

Papua New Guinea Predicted Playing XI:

Assad Vala (c), Charles Amini, Tony Ura, Lega Siaka, Sese Bau, Kiplin Doriga (wk), Gaudi Toka, Chad Soper, Jason Kila, Damien Ravu, Nosaina Pokana

United States Of America Preview

Saurabh Netravalkar would be extremely happy with the show his side put up in the last game. They seem to have all the bases covered after the one-sided win. However, they too have had the problem of inconsistency in the last few tournaments they have played and hence the skipper would like to guard against any complacency here.

Steven Taylor played a great knock in the last game, and he shall look to provide a solid start in the game with Sushant Modani. In Monank Patel and Gajanand Singh they have powerful stroke players in the middle order. Netravalkar, Jaskaran Malhotra and Nisarg Patel make this batting line-up formidable.

Nostush Kenjige and Netravalkar bowled tight spells in the last game and the side would like to see similar show from them here. Jessy Singh too looked good. Nisarg Patel kept the scoring rate under check and along with Malhotra and Elmore Hutchinson adds good options for the skipper.

United States Of America Predicted Playing XI:

Saurabh Netravalkar (c), Nisarg Patel, Monank Patel (wk), Steven Taylor, Karima Gore, Elmore Hutchinson, Sushant Modani, Nosthush Kenjige, Jasdeep Singh, Gajanand Singh, Jaskaran Malhotra

Weather Conditions

The skies over Al Amerat would be clear on September 09 and it would be a warm afternoon. The surface would be flat in the game where batsmen shall have no problems playing on the up and making runs. The side that bats first in the game shall have to look for a score more than 270 runs.

Venue Details

Al Amerat Cricket Ground, Al Amerat has been a good venue for the batsmen. The wicket is flat, and the outfield is lightning fast. There is little on this surface for the fast bowlers and they have struggled here in the past. Spinners have done well as the ball tends to grip on the surface and turn.

Toss: To Bat

The surface here has always been a flat on where batting would be easy in the afternoon and there would be swing in the air in the evening under lights. The side that wins the toss here shouldn’t have much hesitation in batting first on this surface.

Papua New Guinea’s batting form has been disastrous on this tour and where the top order especially their openers have looked in poor form. They will need to fix this problem and do well to win the game. United States of America on the other hand comes here after a great show in the last game and has momentum on its side which shall make them favorites.
