The Perth Scorchers were knocked out of the playoffs last season. They will be looking to put that behind them and get off to a winning start at the home venue.
Melbourne Stars had a poor season last year and they have struggled against the Scorchers quite often in recent years. It will be a tough outing for the visitors who are without some of their star players in the batting lineup.
The last time these two teams met, Perth Scorchers bowled out MLS for 101 at the MCG and chased down the target quite comfortably. Marcus Stoinis will be hoping for better returns from the likes of Hilton Cartwright, and Sam Harper in this game.
Many key players are missing from the squad including Scott Boland and Beau Webster who are part of the Test squad for the ongoing BGT series.
The hosts will be looking up to Jason Behrendorff and Jhye Richardson in the bowling attack to put them on top of the game.

First things first, a few players are missing from this squad for the opening game. Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis are part of the Australia squad for the Test series against India.
We expect Matthew Hurst to come in for Inglis as the wicket-keeper batsman in the middle order whereas batting all-rounder Aaron Hardie can replace Mitchell Marsh. However, if Inglis isn’t part of the Gabba Test, he can be available for the BBL opener.
Hardie has been pretty impressive with the bat and also led the side on a few occasions. In a successful run chase against Hobart Hurricanes where the Scorchers won by 9 wickets while chasing 173 runs, Aaron Hardie was unbeaten on 85 off 45 balls at number 3.
Skipper Ashton Turner is well-known for his big-hitting and will be in the finisher’s role in the lower middle order. And while there is no Laurie Evans this year, they’ve got Finn Allen who can deliver a big start for the Scorchers.
And though Cooper Connoly wasn’t as consistent in the top-order, the batting all-rounder has shown promise and this should be the season he steps up and makes a big mark.
Nick Hobson and Keaten Jennings are other key players in the batting department to watch out for. The pace trio of Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, and Jhye Richardson will be lethal. Scorchers have been brilliant with the ball last season and we reckon the bowlers will play a key role in this opening match.
One of the all-time leading wicket takers in the BBL, Andrew Tye has a phenomenal record at Perth where he has taken 51 wickets in 30 matches and against the Stars he has 28 wickets to his tally. Tye usually bowls in the backend of the innings and with his slower balls & variations will have the best of chances to pick wickets and we back him to take over 1.5 wickets in this match.

Marcus Stoinis has been named the permanent captain of the Melbourne Stars. It needs to be seen what impact the change in leadership will have on the Stars.
They will be missing their former skipper Glenn Maxwell in this game along with the English batter Ben Duckett. They also have Scott Boland in the squad who’s currently part of the Australia squad for the BGT series.
In the opener, it will be up to the likes of Mark Steketee, Joel Paris, and Tom Curran to lead with the ball. Usama Mir is another big miss since the leg-spinner is on national duty.
There are many all-rounders in the squad and that should play in their favor. However, the unavailability of most of the key players will likely hurt Melbourne Stars in this game.
Hilton Cartwright and skipper Marcus Stoinis will be responsible for striking crucial partnerships in the middle and leading the side to a competitive total.
At the top, it is Sam Harper who needs to lead the comeback for Melbourne Stars this year. Batting all-rounder Campbell Kellaway is also likely to find a spot in the XI given many of the key all-rounders are missing this game.
Overall, it is a solid-looking squad but the misses will put them slightly on the back foot in addition to their poor record against the Scorchers.
Stoinis in the last three T20 matches he has played has scored 61, 14 and 21 runs. Against the Scorchers he averages 22.6, amassing 271 runs in 14 matches and at Perth he has scored 94 runs in two matches. Given his recent run of form, we back Stoinis to have a good start to his BBL season and score over 20.5 runs.

It will be partly cloudy in Perth with a high of 20 degrees Celsius. There is no rain prediction for the match day and we can expect an uninterrupted and exciting BBL opener at the Perth Stadium.

Minimal TurnIt is a balanced wicket that has something for everyone. It is known for its pace and bounce and the bowlers will have a great time with the new ball. However, the pace and carry also allow the batters to time the ball well and score plenty of runs on this pitch. The average 1st innings score in the last 10 T20s is 181 runs on this ground. We reckon something around 190-200 should be a highly competitive score in this match.
The average total match score in the last season at Perth was 330.83. The pitch offers equal assistance to both batters and bowlers, with an average first innings score of 166.28 and a second innings score of 147.11. Given the batting depth and firepower of both teams, we predict a total match score of over 312.5 runs.
Teams batting first and second have won 5 games each in the last 10 outings here in T20s. There is plenty of help on offer for the pacers on this ground and we reckon defending a total will be a good strategy in this match.
The home team has the upper hand in the contest. They’ve got a great head-to-head record and pack a strong overall squad with a lethal pace attack that will pose a tough challenge to the visiting side. MLS are missing some of their key players and don’t look so promising with the ball. Perth Scorchers will start as favorites in our match prediction.
