We are in the opening game of the East Africa T20I Series 2022, where hosts Rwanda will look will take on Kenya. The sides had finished on the top of the points table in the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier 2022. Both teams would look for a good start and first points of the tournament in this game.  

Kenya has enjoyed a good run during the recent weeks, winning the last five games the side has played. They would like to drive this momentum forward and start the tournament with a win. Rwanda plays at home, and their players know these conditions well. It will be a good contest between the bat and the ball.

Rwanda Preview

Clinton Rubagumya's side did well in the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier A, finishing just behind Kenya. As they take on their stronger rivals at home, the side would look to put up a good show in the game. Rubagumya would look forward to a powerful performance from his players as they look to take an early lead.  

Orchide Tuyisenge and Eric Dusingizimana will have an important job and aim to establish a big partnership. In the middle order, the side would need runs from the bats of Wilson Niyitanga, Clinton Rubagumya, and Martin Akayezu. Kenya has a good bowling attack, and the team will like to see a good show from Eric Niyomugabo and Didier Ndikubwimana down the order.  

Zappy Bimenyimana and Yvan Mitari must bowl good lines at the top, as the Kenyan batsmen would test them. Emmanuel Sebareme and Kevin Irakoze shall have to bowl good spells in the middle overs of the game. The side will also look for tight figures from Eric Niyomugabo in the supporting role.

Irfan Karim's team dominated during the T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier A, winning all their games. They are a strong side with talented players, and Oluoch would like to continue with the same dominance. They have a strong batting line-up that will make the side confident in this game.  

Rushab Patel and Collins Obuya shall look to provide the side with a solid start in this game. In the middle order, the side would like to see runs from Irfan Karim, Rakep Patel, and Lucas Oluoch, who have done well in recent months. Nelson Odhiambo and Vraj Patel add to the side's batting strength.

We will see overcast skies over Kigali City on December 13, and the conditions will be challenging for the batsmen. Bowlers will get assistance, which will likely be a low-scoring game. The side batting first shall aim for 160 runs on the board.

Venue Details

Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, Kigali City, is a small park with short square boundaries. It allows the batters to free their arms with even bounce and pace on the track. There is assistance for the fast bowlers early in the game. Spinners also do well in the latter overs as the ball grips the surface.

This will be the first game of the tournament, and there will be some juice on the surface which would aid the bowlers. In the last few games, we have seen most teams winning by chasing scores. Hence the side that wins the toss will likely invite the opposition to bat first.
