Scotland will face Italy in the 10th match of the T20 World Cup European Qualifier at Grange Cricket Club, Edinburgh. The hosts survived Jersey scare in their last match at this venue.

They were 6 down for 88 batting first and finished with 149-6. The bowlers cleaned up the Jersey batting order and eventually managed to secure a 14-run win.

Italy, on the other hand, have bounced back strongly after their loss to Ireland in their opening match of the tournament. The loss was a narrow one as Italy finished with 151 for 9 chasing a 159-run target.

Italy’s key bowlers have found their rhythm and will be ones to watch out for. They led them to a 25-run win after posting 183 runs batting first. Though Scotland are more experienced, they will surely have a great challenge at hand when they take on Italy in this match.

Scotland Preview

Scotland kicked off the tournament with a huge win over Germany as they scored 234 runs batting first. However, in the very next game, they suffered a batting collapse against Jersey and had half of their team back in the hut for just 84 runs.

Considering the current form of the Italian bowlers, Scotland could get in trouble if they don’t bounce back quickly and find their form. George Munsey and Ollie Hairs will be opening the innings for Scotland.  In the middle-order, they’ve got Matthew Cross and skipper Richie Berrington.

This is a great looking top 4 and Scotland should be expecting a much better performance from them against Italy. The batting lineup is very deep with Chris Greaves and Mark Watt making significant contributions at numbers 7 and 8. Mark Watt has picked 6 wickets in 2 matches so far and will be leading the bowling attack.

Watt and Bradley Curie have the job to deliver early breakthroughs. Right-arm leg break bowler Chris Greaves could also play a crucial role in the bowling department.

There are many high-impact bowlers in this squad with Safyaan Sharif and Gavin Main all delivering significant spells. Though the batting collapsed in the last game, Scotland have what it takes to turn things around and also dominate with the ball.

Scotland Predicted Playing XI:

George Munsey, Ollie Hairs, Matthew Cross (wk), Richie Berrington (c), Brandon McMullen, Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Safyaan Sharif, Gavin Main, Bradley Currie

Italy Preview

Italy has been one of the most promising T20 teams to come out of Europe in the recent past. They are knocking at the door and if they manage a win here, they’d probably get even closer to the T20 World Cup 2024.

They fought well against Ireland and played an attacking brand of cricket against Jersey. The top order of Justin Mosca, Ben Manenti, and Wayne Madsen looks in great touch at the moment. All three of them stepped up and delivered impactful performances in their last outing.

Also, the reliable middle-order batsman Marcus Compopiano also came to the party with a 22-ball 44-run knock at number 6 giving Italy just the finish they needed.

They are facing a strong bowling attack that features some experienced T20 bowlers who’ve played all around the world. The challenge is a big one but Italy look promising enough to deliver another good fight. Their bowlers have been mighty impressive.

Skipper Gareth Berg has picked 6 wickets in the last two games while Harry Manenti has picked 5. Grant Stewart and Jaspreet Singh have also found success with the ball. And with more wicket-taking bowlers in the side, the skipper can rotate his bowlers well without having to depend only on a select few. Italy look well prepared to take on the Scottish challenge.

Italy Predicted Playing XI:

Justin Mosca, Ben Manenti, Marcus Campopiano, Anthony Mosca, Harry Manenti, Gian Meade (wk), Grant Stewart, Gareth Berg (c), Jaspreet Singh, Crishan Kalugamage, Syed Naqvi, Stefano di Bartolomeo, Manpreet Singh, Sukhwinder Singh

Weather Conditions

The pitch is quite good for batting as we have seen in recent matches. In the last match here, Ireland scored 200+ batting first against Austria. However, in Scotland’s last outing here, the bowlers were on top of the game. It would be an even contest between bat and ball on this pitch and that makes for an exciting game of cricket. The weather will be mostly cloudy with a high of 17 degrees Celsius.

Venue Details

Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh will be the venue for this match. The average 1st innings score here in T20Is is 164 runs. Considering that both teams have a deep batting lineup, we reckon a 175+ total would be a more competitive 1st innings score on this ground.

Toss: To Bat

There isn’t any clear advantage to either batting or bowling first on this ground. Both teams managed to successfully defend a total in their last game and have their key bowlers in good form. They will likely opt to bat first on winning the toss.

Scotland were taken by surprise by Jersey in their last match. And if they don’t put their best foot forward in this match, Italy could put them on the back foot. And it may not be easy to bounce back from another collapse this time. Though Italy has shown great promise in every department, Scotland are still the superior side and will start as big favorites in our match prediction.
