Sri Lanka’s new look ODI side have been brutal against the Afghanistan side in the ODI series so far, winning both their games fairly convincingly.

In the first ODI, the hosts got up to 380 runs in the first match with opener Nissanka bringing up his first double ton, and, in reply, twin centuries from Omarzai and Nabi made sure the visitors went down fighting. SL won the match by 42 runs.

The second ODI also saw Sri Lanka bat first and post a 300+ total. Chasing 309 for a victory, the visitors did well to steady the ship after the hosts drew first blood removing opener Gurbaz in the seventh over.

Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah picked up a half century each, but Ibrahim departed first and Rahmat followed him shortly triggering a collapse that saw the visitors crumble for a mini collapse. They were all out for 153 in no time, and the hosts completed a 155-run drubbing to gain an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. What does the final ODI hold?

Sri Lanka Preview

An impressive feature about this new-look SL side is that someone is putting their hand up and ready to step up to the plate.

The double centurion from the first match, Pathum Nissanka, had a short stay at the crease, and his opening partner couldn’t quite repeat his heroics from the first match either.

But the batsmen to follow, namely captain Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Janith Liyanage, led the charge with the bat, making sure that SL brought up their second-successive 300-plus total.

Similarly, Wanindu Hasaranga, who was surprisingly off colour in the first game, made his presence felt with an impressive four wicket hall that broke the backbone of the Afghanistan middle order triggering a collapse.

The crafty spinner bamboozled the opposition with his bunch of tricks after Asitha Fernando made a crucial breakthrough removing Ibrahim Zadran. Dilshan Madushanka found himself back among the wickets, cleaning up the tail.

The SL outfit is high on confidence with the way they’re executing their skills with the bat and ball, and they’d be hoping to put on another impressive display to pull off a whitewash against a much-improved Afghanistan side.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing XI:

Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (c & wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Asitha Fernando, Pramod Madushan.

Afghanistan Preview

The courage and skill that the visitors showed in the first ODI to chase after a mammoth 381 was nowhere to be seen in the second ODI.

In fact, they were in a much better position to dictate terms with the ball and bat at different points in the game. Fielding lapses in the backend of the game forced them to let Sri Lanka get away with too many runs to a safe, competitive total. After falling behind in their chase early on, the visitors found themselves playing catch up with the required run rate for most of their innings. And just when the set pair of Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah tried to up the ante, the opener perished against run of play. Rahmat Shah quickly followed him back to the hut, triggering a mother of all collapses that saw the visitors lose 8 wickets for just 10 runs.

A demoralizing defeat of that magnitude is not easy to put behind, but the visitors have a lot of work to do if they want to avoid a 0-3 whitewash. Afghanistan had a chance to win an important away series last time, but they couldn’t quite close it out. AFG drew first blood, winning the first match. The second ODI was rained out but SL chased 314 in the third ODI denying the visitors their first series win on SL soil.

Afghanistan Predicted Playing XI:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Ikram Alikhil (wk), Noor Ahmad, Qais Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Weather Conditions

The Pallekele wicket has been more batting-friendly than expected, with the home team registering two 300+ scores in a row. The wicket may not be as nice and firm as it was in the matches before, but we think we have another high scoring match on the cards. It was a little cloudy on match day eve but the weather forecast suggests that things should clear up on game day.

SL vs AFG Pitch Report

The third and final match of the ODI series will also be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. Of the 41 matches held here, 17 have been won by team batting first and 22 by team batting second. 314/6, which SL pulled off against AFG in 2002, remains the highest chase on this ground.

Toss: To Bat

The team winning toss is likely to have a bat first. Sri Lanka would look to bat first and post another daunting total on the board to put pressure on Afghanistan batters. Afghanistan, having chased on both occasions, would not think twice to have a bat first if the coin toss went their way.

Sri Lanka will defeat Afghanistan to complete a hat trick of wins and a 3-0 whitewash.

We are backing Sri Lanka as the winners of this contest.
