The T20I World cup is over! And the teams have started preparing for the ODI World Cup scheduled for the next year. On the road to direct qualification, Sri Lanka will host Afghanistan for a 3-match ODI series. The first ODI will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on 25th November from 2:30 pm. Sri Lanka will play their first ODI after a gap of 5 months.

Sri Lanka played a three-match series against Zimbabwe in Jan, followed by a five-match series against Australia in June. They won both series by 2-1 & 3-2, respectively. But Sri Lanka are not yet found themselves in the direct qualification list of the ICC World Cup 2023. They are currently in the 10th position in the 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, with 62 points.

Afghanistan are having a dream run in the ODIs this year. Out of 9 ODIs, they have won 7. They are in contention to directly qualify for the ICC World Cup and are in 7th place with 100 points in the points table. Rahmat Shah (484 runs) and Rashid Khan (18 wickets) will be the player to look out for against Sri Lanka.

This will be the first ODI played between these two after a gap of 3 and a half years. They met at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in Cardiff. Sri Lanka won that game by 34 runs (D/L Method).

Sri Lanka Preview

What a whirlwind set of events the Lankan team has been going through in the last couple of weeks. First, the T20I World Cup exit, followed by Danushka Gunathilaka’s arrest on the charges of Sexual Assault. To this time, they are yet to announce their ODI squad. Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka will have a tough time adjusting to the recent dynamics. With Gunathilaka out of the squad, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis will likely open the innings for Lanka. Nissanka is their leading run-scorer this year, with 368 runs at an average of 47. Nissanka has 1 century and 3 half centuries in the last 8 innings. He is our choice for the top batter.

Kusal Mendis effectively led the Sri Lankan batting attack against Australia this year. Mendis came up with 249 runs at the end and continued his form in the T20 World Cup by finishing in the top 5 run scorer of the tournament. Both Mendis and Nissanka will determine the output for Lankan chances to get direct qualification for the upcoming World Cup. The Lankan middle order will depend on Charith Asalanka, C Karunaratne, and skipper Dasun Shanaka. Asalanka has 333 runs in the last 8 innings. But Karunaratne and Shanaka are averaging less than 30 this year. Karunaratne is compensating for the batting struggle with the ball. He has 10 wickets this year at an economy of 5.80.

Leg spinner Jeffrey Vandersay will lead the bowling attack with Wanindu Hasaranga. Vandersay is their leading wicket-taker in the absence of Hasaranga and has 14 wickets in 7 innings, all coming on home soil. Sri Lanka’s major problem is with the pacers. The lack of wickets from the pacers might haunt them in this series. Dunith Wellalage might be rested to try Maheesh Theekshana.

Key Players: Kusal Mendis, Jeffrey Vandersay, Wanindu Hasaranga

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing XI:

Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wk), Charith Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Dasun Shanaka (c), Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Jeffrey Vandersay, Pramod Madushan, Maheesh Theekshana, Dhananjaya de

Afghanistan Preview

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi will continue to lead the ODI setup for Afghanistan after a failed campaign in the T20 World Cup. Rahmanullah Gurbaz will open the innings with Ibrahim Zadran. Gurbaz has 276 runs in 9 innings this year, while Zadran, who has played just 4 out of the 9 ODIs this year, has been averaging at 51. At number three, Afghanistan will go with their leading run-scorer of the year - Rahmat Shah (our choice for the top batter). Shah has 484 runs in 9 innings, including 4 half-centuries.

Shah will get support from his skipper in the middle order. Shahidi has 317 runs at an average of 40 in the middle. Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi will play an integral role in the middle order. Zadran has an average of 46.80 while scoring 234 runs this year. Nabi, who recently stepped down from T20I captaincy, has 10 wickets this season at an economy of 3.39 - the best amongst the Afghanistan bowling attack.

Rashid Khan, Fazallah Farooqi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman will headline the bowling unit. Rashid Khan, as always, is their leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets at an economy of 4.07. The afghani bowling attack has been the most economical this year and has kept the runs below 4.7 every over. Left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad has been given his first call. Noor caught everyone’s eye when he returned with 4 wickets for 10 on his T20I debut.

Key Players: Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rashid Khan.

Venue Details

The 1st T20I of the series between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on 25th November from 2:30 pm. The venue holds a capacity of 35000 spectators and has hosted 9 Tests, 33 ODIs & 23 T20Is so far.

Toss: To Bat

In the 33 ODIS, the results have favored the team bowling first. 19 outcomes have gone with the team chasing the target. Surprisingly, the average 1st innings score is more than the second by 44 runs, bringing us to the stat that 3 out of the last 4 games & 7 out of the last 10 have been won by the team setting the target. The team winning the toss should bat first.

Both teams have a good run in the 50-over format of the game. But Sri Lanka has a home advantage. They have won both ODI series played at home this year. They had a better run in the T20I World Cup than Afghanistan. Besides that, Lanka has won 3 out of 4 ODIs played against Afghanistan.

We predict that Sri Lanka will defeat Afghanistan.
