Tournament: India tour of Sri lanka 2021 | Format: ODI | Venue: R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo, SriLanka | Toss: To Bat
Bet NowAfter so many hurdles, India’s tour of Sri Lanka will finally get a go on 18th July with the first day & night ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Initially slated to start on 13th July, the 3-ODI series will be followed by 3-T20Is between 18-29 June. With so many new faces in both teams, cricket is finally returning to the Asia continent.
After the clash between the schedules of the ICC World Test Championship final and the planned tour of Sri Lanka, BCCI opted to send a completely different team to Sri Lanka under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan with Rahul Dravid appointed as the head coach. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been assigned the role of deputy. The series is being looked at as hope for several domestic players who have been awarded a chance to jump into the international shoes under the absence of the regulars.
Devdutt Paddikal and Prithwi Shaw who have impressed the selectors with their domestic as well as IPL performances are the players to look out for in this series. Other than these two, IPL faces like Varun Chakravarthy, Chetan Sakaria, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Krishnappa Gowtham who had a big payday in the IPL 2021 auctions are picked as a part of the 20 member squad. The tour will see all 20 players in action as Rahul Dravid said everyone will get a chance to play under his watch.
SLC had a tumultuous month. After losing the T20Is and ODI series against England, they were left with no players who had signed the main contract. After an agreement between the boards and players finally, all members except Angelo Mathews signed a new contract. But who said the problem stopped there? Two members of the supporting squad including coach Grant Flower tested positive for Covid. This led to both boards announcing a revised schedule of the tour. After suspending Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka, and Niroshan Dickwella for breaching the bubble protocols, Lankan team dealt with another blow with main batter Kusal Perera’s injury.
Sri Lanka has lost their last three ODIs series to West Indies (3-0), Bangladesh (2-1), and England (3-0). Their record is not good against India since the final of the World Cup 2011 too. They have won only 6 out of 30 games against the visitors including 2 whitewashes while hosting them. And in the current situation, they have a less experienced side to pick from against the second team of India.
Dasun Shanaka has been handed the captaincy of the Lankan side under the absence of injured Kusal Perera. Dhananjaya de Silva will be handling the charge of his deputy. Bhanuka Rajpaksha has been awarded a spot in the team after getting fined earlier this month for breaching the contract. Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Ranjitha will be returning from the injury to resume their duties. Minod Bhanuka who played only ODI against Pakistan in 2019 will take the place of Perera as a wicket-keeper.
Wanindu Hasaranga will be the most experienced player against India as he has played 10 ODIs against them so far. With 344 runs scored at an average of 38.22 he will be having a big responsibility on his shoulders to carry Lankan team. de Silva who averages 44 against the visitors could be the key for the Lankan attack. As far as the bowling department is concerned, most of the faces haven’t faced India. Dushmantha Chameera has 14 wickets in his plate with an economy of 4.77 against India. It will be interesting to see how Shanaka uses his main guy against the second but experienced Indian team.

Well, well, well! It doesn't look like the Indian team is on the back foot. Rather, they face a problem to pick between Prithwi Shaw, Dedutt Paddikal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad to open with Shikhar Dhawan. Looks like Rahul Dravid has done a tremendous job at the grassroots to provide such a magnificent output. Suryakumar Yadav will be taking captain Kohli’s spot is one thing the fans are assured of. The middle order will be composed of Pandya Brothers. Hardik Pandya who missed the Test berth has a record of 310 runs against Sri Lanka at an average of 62. The Mumbai Indians duo are set to rock the Lankan stage. They have the support of Manish Pandey and Sanju Samson in the middle-order.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be leading the bowling department in addition to his vice-captaincy duties. Navdeep Saini and Deepak Chahar are set to battle for the second seamer spot. We haven’t reached the main part yet. The spin duos Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, commonly known as ‘KulCha’ are eying their comeback. It was Edgabaston in 2019 where they finally bowled together. In fact, it was the 2017 tour of Sri Lanka where they bowled together for the first time and helped India win the series 5-0. With Rahul Chahar, Krishnappa Gowtham and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy included in the squad, the hype of the KulCha’s might not get a go as they are not certainly looked as a starter.
Key Players: Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

The pitch is a spinners paradise. It is not flat like Galle and doesn’t offer much pace. The weather will be partly cloudy throughout the day. The temperature will vary between 27°C to 30°C. The wind will be blowing at 20 km/h. It’s the monsoon season in the sub-continent and therefore chances of rain are high. A thunderstorm is predicted with 70% chance of rain on Sunday.
The venue for this match is R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. It has a capacity of 35,000 spectators. Established in 1986, it is the biggest stadium in Sri Lanka and has already hosted 131 ODIs.
It’s a bowling wicket. In 131 ODIs played here, the team batting first has won 71 times. While the team bowling first has been successful on 50 occasions. The average score of 1st innings is 235 compared to 195 in the second innings. Therefore, the team winning the toss should bat first.
Though everyone is calling the Indian cricket team a B team, they have more experience than the 25 Sri Lankan players combined. It would not be a cakewalk for the visitors but Shikhar Dhawan’s side is eying to prove that the second team of India can take on any side in the world.
We predict that India will defeat Sri Lanka.
