Tournament: India tour of Sri lanka 2021 | Format: ODI | Venue: R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo, SriLanka | Toss: To Bat
Bet NowThe second ODI of the 3-ODIs series between Sri Lanka and India will be held on 20th July at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The series finally took off with the 1st ODI played at the same venue. The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first. They set a target of 263 runs which India chased in the 37th over for the loss of 3 wickets. Batting first, Sri Lanka had a good start. Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka put up a stand of 49 runs in 9 overs. India who had the worst average in power plays were sent on a backfoot as two lead bowlers failed to produce a wicket. But then Skipper Dhawan brought the Kulcha’s from both ends. Chahal struck in his first ball of this innings followed by Kuldeep Yadav sending the Lankan top-order back to the pavilion. To what it looked like at one time, completely turned into the side of India. Krunal Pandya also played a crucial role by keeping the run rate under 5 to put pressure on Lankan batters to play reckless shots. And that’s what happened with Rajapaksa who didn’t judge a wrong one and gave his wicket easily.
Charith Asalanka and skipper Dasun Shanaka stabilized the innings in the middle overs with 38 (65 balls) & 39 ( 50 balls) respectively. Some big shots from Chamika Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera helped Lanka to score 40 runs in the last three overs and to take the scoreboard to 262 for the loss of 9 wickets. Karunaratne scored 43 of 35 balls with help of 2 sixes and a boundary. Deepak Chahar, Chahal, and Yadav took 2 wickets each while the Pandya brothers supported them with 1 wicket each. What a classy reply India came up with. Playing his 4th ODI Prithwi Shaw showed the world why he was and is the next big thing. Those fearless shots on the offside including some classy drives showed the young guy’s intent from the beginning. Shah scored 43 runs consisting of 9 boundaries. Dhawan and Shaw put on a 58 runs opening stand out of which Shaw scored 43 and Dhawan scored 7. With a good chase scripted from the beginning, Shaw threw his wicket to Dhananjaya de Silva.
Lanka thought they might make a comeback like India in the 1xt innings. But the Birthday boy Ishan Kishan had some different plans. Debutant Kishan started his ODI career with a six and scored a fifty with 8 fours and 2 sixes. Sri Lankan fielders dropped Kishan twice and they just ended up losing the plot. Kishan torched the stadium up in his 59 runs innings. Both Shaw and Kishan took India’s score to 143 in 18 overs. Here is where Shikhar Dhawan decided to gear up and take things in his hand. With 86 of 95 balls from Dhawan and 31 of 20 balls from Surya Kumar Yadav helped India gulp the target in 37 overs. With the win over Sri Lanka, India took all 10 points in the Super League.
It is not a lack of talent but the lack of temperament. The main reason Sri Lanka losing the first ODI was its inability to stay on the crease for a long time. Both Fernando and Bhanuka gave a decent start to Lanka. But everything went in vain as the wickets kept falling. The second most important thing was that the inexperienced squad couldn’t pace up the innings. Only Karunaratne and Chameera showed some intent to score some big shots.
This is where Lanka should work on before coming to play the second ODI. The Lankan bowling department had one off-day. But the same attitude didn’t let them come back into the game from the start. Chameera who started first just kept bowling bouncers. Udana came under the wrath of Shaw. Clearly, the captain couldn’t connect with his bowlers in the beginning. Poor fielding (dropping two catches of Ishan Kishan) proved the flaws in the system that needs to be addressed. From what it looks like there won’t be any changes in the Lanka team for the second ODI. it’s just the self-confidence that is required of Lankan players who have lost 9 of their last 100 ODIs.

Coach Rahul Dravid and Skipper Dhawan will be without worry seeing the performances of the youngsters. India handed two ODI caps before the first game - for Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. The fearless attitude of Mumbai Indians’ colleagues showed their approach in chasing. By hitting a fifty, Kishan became the first Indian player to score a fifty on debut in ODIs and in T20Is. Shaw, Kishan, and Yadav are set to give a headache to the Indian selectors while picking up a team for the next time.
But Rahul Dravid will definitely have a chat with Manish Pandey. Pandey played a knock of 26 runs in 40 balls when all the things were operating smoothly. And with Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad sitting outside he will not hesitate to give chance to the youngsters. Return of Kulcha put a lot of things on the platter. Yadav and Chahal took 4 wickets including 3 from the top-order. So it will be an unchanged side from India for the 2nd ODI.

The venue for this match is R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. It has a capacity of 35,000 spectators. Established in 1986, it is the biggest stadium in Sri Lanka and has already hosted 132 ODIs.
It’s a bowling wicket. In 132 ODIs played here, the team batting first has won 71 times. While the team bowling first has been successful on 51 occasions. Therefore, the team winning the toss should bat first.
There was not a second where this Indian team missed their key team players. The plan was smooth and its execution was even smoother. Sri Lanka on the other hand couldn’t figure out how and what to set as a target. In fact, they lost their 6th game in a row on the same ground against India. Therefore, we don’t see any changes in the outcome.
We predict that India will defeat Sri Lanka.
