West Indies and Sri Lanka will face off in the second match of the series at Dambulla on Tuesday night.
There’s a lot of similarity between these two Island nations. A new coach has taken charge of each side. Both sides had a very ordinary T20 world cup. They showed a lot of promise in white ball cricket at home of late though, with West Indies winning the series against South Africa and India, and Sri Lanka dominating Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.
But West Indies showed Sri Lanka who’s boss with a thumping win in the first T20I. With that dominating performance, West Indies put themselves in the lead on the head to head stats for last five matches.
Although all of this counts for very little in a format like T20, West Indies will fancy their chances of picking up another win and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series to round out a special year in which it's fair to say they’ve redeemed themselves in the shortest format of the game.

Sri Lanka, put into bat, got their innings underway smoothly. Boundaries were hard come by initially, but the openers still kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely to get to 17/0 off the first couple of overs. Pathum Nissanka perished flashing at a wide one in the third, and Kusal Perera followed him to the hut pretty soon after losing his pole to a brilliant ball from Shamar Joseph.
Kusal Mendis set up for a big innings but his stay ended before he could get to 20. At 58/3, the hosts were in a spot of bother, but Kamindu Mendis and captain Charith Asalanka came together in the middle, adding crucial 82 runs for the fourth wicket of just 53 balls. Both brought up deserving half centuries, with Asalanka scoring his in 29 balls, 7 less than what Mendis took to get to his.
Their partnership was crucial in Sri Lanka finishing the innings with 179, which seemed slightly below par total on a decent batting strip. Sri Lanka’s frontline bowlers removed any doubts around how challenging 180 was to chase.
Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Asitha Fernando and spinner Maheesh Theekshana started off poorly, with the two pacers leaking 50 runs between them in their four overs, and the spinner giving away 24 runs off his two. It looked like the bowlers had given up the fight after the powerplay, and struggled to get the opposition to slow down a touch.
By the end of the 13th over the visitors had rushed to 107 for no loss, and that was the game done and dusted.
Kamindu Mendis is in top form with the bat and he scored a valiant half century in the last game, he is one of the most reliable to bet on to score runs, given his recent form we back Mendis to score over 21.5 runs.
Sri Lanka smashed 21 fours in the last game, their batters have been in really good form and are well accustomed to the conditions at home. The Lankan batters will be look to dominated and set a huge target or chase down any total hat West Indies sets. They are more of a boundary scoring team and we back them to hit over 17.5 fours in today's match.

West Indies openers Brandon King and Evin Lewis brought out a complete onslaught, making vital fifties to steer their chase towards the target.
They tore into the hosts attack and were determined to go after the bowlers in the powerplay throwing caution to the wind. They shaved 74 runs off the target inside the powerplay, but kept going after the Sri Lankan bowlers without relenting.
The visitors posted 100 runs on the board in the 9th over and looked like they’d finish things off in a canter. But the Sri Lankan bowlers sent down a few quiet overs through the middle phase, and West Indies finally got over the line in the final over with five wickets to spare.
Earlier, West Indies bowlers made sure they didn’t let the Sri Lankan top order off to a great start on a helpful pitch.
WI quicks Romario Shepherd and Shamar Joseph were too good for the hosts’ top order , with the later conceding just 27 runs off his four. Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase were miserly and kept things nice and tight in the middle as Sri Lanka batsmen tried to wiggle out of a shaky start.
In the first T20I, West Indies smashed 20 fours and they dominated the Sri Lankan spinners, with their top order in superb form, expect another run-scoring game and West Indies to hit over 14.5 fours.

Batters make merry on the strip here in Dambulla. If you look at the statistics from Men’s and Women’s T20I cricket here, the surfaces here have generally suited batters more. And if the bighitters find their range and get going fair too quickly, it’s going to be hard stopping them. The conditions for the first game were wasn’t ideal with a bit of drizzle around at different instances during the game, and the forecast suggests we are in for similar conditions for this fixture.

The match is being played at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. West Indies will take heart from their dominating performance from the first game, while Sri Lanka will have to look to quickly reorganize and come back hard.
In this year so far, West Indies have gone on to win 8 out of 11 matches fielding first. With an impressive win record like that, they’re not going to back off from chasing a score if they win the toss.
Sri Lanka’s two wins against West Indies in recent matches have come whenever they have defended a total. They were poor in defence of 180 in the first match and wouldn’t mind pushing West Indies out of their comfort zone, which is chasing totals.
West Indies played smart cricket and used the conditions brilliantly with both bat and ball to seize the initiative from the hosts. And that proved to be the difference between winning and losing. We guess West Indies will take a similar approach and go hard at the top and negotiate the Sri Lankan spinners carefully. If the Sri Lankan spinners don’t have an impact on the game, West Indies will take the win and the trophy.
We are backing West Indies as winners of this contest.
