The pressure would be on Sri Lanka Women to avoid series defeat as the side takes on India Women in the 2nd ODI of the three-match series. The Indian team registered a comfortable 4-wicket win in the first game after initial hiccups with the bat and the side shall be aiming for an unassailable 2-0 lead.  

Sri Lanka Women have had a miserable record against India where the side has won only twice in the 30 games the two sides have played in the past. Their batters are in poor form, and this had hurt the side even during the T20 series. They need to put all that behind and it will be interesting to see if the Lankan women can level the series here and set up a series decider in the last game.

Chamari Athapaththu may have run out of ideas to get performance out of her players. The middle-order is in poor form and the side needs them to stand up and deliver. A series loss hangs over their head and the Sri Lankan skipper would like to see a better show from her players in this game as they aim to level the series 1-1.  

Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera are key players for the side and the opening pair shall have to deliver a strong start in this game. The middle-order has struggled since the start of the series and if they wish to challenge the Indians the trio of Vishmi Gunaratne, Harshitha Madavi and Hansima Karunaratne must score runs. The side would be happy with the form of Nilakshi de Silva who has shown good form and she will look to add runs with Anushka Sanjeewani.  

Achini Kulasuriya and Oshadi Ranasinghe looked good with the new ball in the last game, and they must deliver early wickets. Inoka Ranaweera’s four-wicket haul would make her confident in the game. The likes of Kavisha Dilhari, Athapaththu, and Rashmi de Silva must bowl tight lines as Indians have a strong batting line-up.

Harmanpreet Kaur would be happy to have started her ODI captaincy career with a win. However, the Indian skipper would be slightly worried about the form of her batters. They haven’t been in their full might yet on this tour. Their batters need to approach the game with more intent and positivity.  

Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana haven’t been at their best and the pair shall look to set up a strong opening wicket stand in this game. In the middle order, Kaur has looked good, and she would have to steer the innings with Yastika Bhatia and Harleen Deol. They have depth in this line-up with Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, and Pooja Vastrakar.  

On the bowling front, the side has done well, and they would look for a good show from Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma in the game with the new ball. Vastrakar and Meghna Singh shall need to do well in the middle overs for the side. Kaur and Deepti Sharma shall have to fill in the role of a fifth bowler well in this game.

We would see overcast skies over Pallekele on July 4 and the weather conditions are likely to make it a good day for the bowlers. However, this is a flat surface where the ball comes to the bat. The side that bats first here would like to have 230 runs or more on the board to feel safe. 

Venue Details

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium has big boundaries and a fast outfield. It has been a great venue for the batters as they can place the ball on the up.  There isn’t much on this surface for the fast bowlers. Spinners enjoy bowling on this surface as the ball grips the surface and turns sharply.

The wicket was a good one to bat on during the last game but both teams look a challenging surface. Most teams have won games here batting first and putting decent scores on the board. We don’t expect to see hesitation at the toss and the side winning it shall like to bat first.
