Sri Lanka Women would have a big challenge on their hands as they take on a confident India Women team. The Sri Lankans suffered a whitewash against Pakistan before this series and they will need to improve on their show. The Indian team also had a bad tour of Australia and New Zealand where they couldn’t win a single game and shall look to hit form here.  

Sri Lanka Women have won just three out of the last 20 games the side has played and their performance against higher-ranked sides has been poor. They haven’t defeated the Indians once in the last 10 games and this is likely to play on their minds in this game. It will take an extraordinary performance from the side in this game to defeat the Indians.

Chamari Athapaththu has her task cut out. She will have to lead from the front to lift her side out of the slump. They haven’t defeated a higher-ranked side in a while and come with a string of failures. The side is failing to compete at the highest level, and they would need a lot of self-belief to do well in this game. It will be a tough game and Athapaththu would like to see determined efforts from her players.  

Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera are key players for the side, and they would need to set up a good opening wicket stand in this game. The middle-order hasn’t performed in recent games and the likes of Nilakshi de Silva, Oshadi Ranasinghe, and Kavisha Dilhari shall have to add runs. Anushka Sanjeewani and Ama Kanchana shall have to do the heavy lifting towards the end of the innings.  

Udeshika Prabodhani and Ama Kanchana shall have to strike early as the Indians have powerful hitters of the ball at the top. Ranasinghe and Sugandika Kumari will have to bowl tight lines in the middle overs and prevent the Indians from accelerating. Kavisha Dilhari and Achini Kulasuriya have to do well in the supporting role.

Harmanpreet Kaur would like to put behind the tour of Australia and New Zealand with a good show here. Some of their key players didn’t perform in those games and the side would be looking for a better show from them. They have a stronger side than the Sri Lankans and an enviable record against them. However, the Indian skipper wouldn’t want her side to be complacent in this game. She will be aiming for an early lead and set the top for the rest of the tour.  

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma form a strong opening pair and the side would expect an electrifying start from them in this game. In the middle order, Jemimah Rodrigues has been in good form, and she will look to build quick partnerships with Kaur and Yastika Bhatia. Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma, and Pooja Vastrakar can play their strokes and add solidity to this batting line-up.  

Poonam Yadav comes back into the side, and she will look to strike early sharing the new ball with Renuka Singh as Sri Lanka’s batting strength lies in its opening pair. Rajeshwari Gayakwad has enjoyed good form in recent games, and this is good news for the side. They would also look for a good show from Kaur, Deepti Sharma, and Vastrakar.

Dambulla would see a bright and sunny day on June 23, and the batting conditions are expected to be difficult as the wicket would be on the slower side. Spinners are expected to enjoy these conditions and they will turn the ball. The side batting first would need 140 runs on the board to feel confident.

Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla is a challenging surface for the batters as the ball doesn’t come onto the bat nicely. There isn’t much on this surface for the fast bowlers. It is a good venue for the spinners as the ball turns sharply and creates doubts in the minds of the batters.

We expect to see a wicket that would be slow and scoring runs is expected to be difficult. Most teams have won games here chasing as a target score gives them a good advantage. Hence, the side winning the toss here should have no hesitation in opting to bowl first in the game.
