Amelia Kerr’s all-round performance gave New Zealand Women a 1-0 lead against Sri Lanka Women in the three-match T20I series. The second T20I of the series will be played at P Sara Oval, Colombo on 10th July from 10:00 am. Sri Lanka Women have never won a T20I game against New Zealand. But they had their first ODI series victory against the same just a few days back. Everyone’s eyes are on SLW captain Chamari Athapaththu who had 2 centuries in the ODI series with a strike rate of T20Is (151.22)

In a low-scoring first T20I, Sri Lanka Women batted first to score 106 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. After losing Athapaththu on the first delivery, opener Vishmi Gunaratne kept the scoreboard alive with 26 runs in 28 balls. But NZ spinners Eden Carson, Amelia Kerr, and Leigh Kasperek took 6 wickets collectively to restrict SL Women to 106. Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr then took calculative risks to put NZW in a strong position. The top-order duo put up a partnership of 58 runs. Two days back, Sri Lanka Women not only secured their maiden ODI win over New Zealand Women but also created history by clinching their first-ever series victory against the White Ferns. But the success party lasted for a day. The first T20I loss clearly showed Sri Lanka Women’s dependency on their skipper. Athapaththu scored 248 runs in the ODI series at a strike rate of 151.22. In the last four games (3 ODIs & 1 T20I), Athapaththu scored two centuries and two golden ducks. The golden ducks bought losses for the home side too. Athapaththu has a decent record against NZ Women. In 10 games she has scored 215 runs at a strike rate of 99.54. Her opening partner has a poor T20 record. A strike rate of 77.73 is a no threat to opponents.  

Harshitha Madavi at number three is been SL Women’s strength for a long time. The left-hand batter has 814 runs in 39 innings so far with a century and three half-centuries. Besides this, Harshitha is SL’s leading run scorer against NZ Women. She has 292 runs at an average of 41.71 & a strike rate of 92.11.will play a crucial role in the middle for SL. Hansima Karunaratne, Nilakshi de Silva, Kavisha Dilhari & Anushka Sanjeewani are the weak links for Sri Lanka Women. None of them have performed well recently. 

Oshadi Ranasinghe, Inoka Ranaweera, and Insodhi Priyadarshini will lead the bowling unit for SL. Priyadarshini took 3 wickets for SL Women in the first WT20I. Ranaweera has 80 wickets in 69 innings of WT20I. She hasn’t played much against NZ Women but has 7 wickets in 6 games. Overall, except for Athapaththu, no other SL player has the charisma to make NZ Women sweat for the victory.

NZ Women showed SL that they are the favourites of this format. Maintaining unbeaten status against a team is not everyone’s cup of tea. Suzie Bates & Bernadine Bezuidenhout will open for NZ. Bates is our choice for the top batter from the NZ side. Bates, who has an experience of over 144 WT20I, has 400 runs against SLW in 10 innings at a strike rate of 115.94 with three half-centuries. Bates scored 44 in the first game to make it 1-0 easily for NZ Women.

Amelia Kerr’s form against SL Women will be the key in the second WT20I. Kerr, who is one of the best all-rounders has 107 runs at a strike rate of 130.76 and 7 wickets at an average of 9.71 against SL Women. She was the player of the match in the first game. Skipper Sophie Devine couldn’t score in the first game. But 206 runs in 11 innings against the home team at a strike rate of 113.81 doesn’t rule her out to produce the required runs in the middle.

Spinners took 6 wickets for NZ Women in the first game. Eden Carson, Amelia Kerr, and Leigh Kasperek will lead the attack for NZ in the second WT20I. NZ used 8 bowlers in the first game. With such a bowling depth, it will be a blind choice that they will come out as winners in the second game too.
