The inaugural Vitality Blast T20 winner Surrey Lions will take on the last season’s semi-finalist Surrey at the Kennington Oval on 2nd June from 11:00 pm. Surrey Lions have 4 points in two matches and are at the third position in the points table of the south group. On the other hand, Hampshire Royals are yet to open their points account after three games played in the lost causes.
Surrey started the 20th season of the Vitality Blast with a 4-wicket win over Glamorgan. They continued their form in the rain-affected game against Gloucestershire. Batting first, Surrey Openers Jason Roy and Will Jacks put up a 60 runs partnership in the first 5 overs that helped them register a total of 129 runs in 15 overs. Sam Curran’s 4 for 14 and Reece Topley’s 2 for 6 broke the bone of the Gloucs batting lineup. Surrey bowled out the Gloucs for 92, in the end, to make it 2 wins in 2 for this season. Hampshire have been facing a dilemma after losing their first three games of this season. The last year's semi-finalist and two times Vitality Blast Winner came close to winning their first game against Middlesex but couldn’t score the required 14 runs in the last over. Since then they have lost to Somerset by 4 wickets and to Essex by 8. In 3 games Hampshire’s highest total is 153 while their bowlers have taken just 14 wickets. This clearly shows they are struggling in both departments.
In the last season, Surrey beat Hampshire by 20 runs. Chasing 147, Hampshire got restricted to 126 for the loss of 8 wickets. Gus Atkinson (3 wickets) and Jamie Overton (2 wickets for 14) drew the last straw for Surrey to maintain their unbeaten run against Hampshire for the last 8 matches. Overall, Surrey has 14 wins in 28 games played against Hampshire, 3 more than their counterparts.
Surrey has been phenomenal with bat and ball in the first two games. Their openers Jason Roy and Will Jacks have collectively scored 100 runs in two games at a strike rate of 165.38 and 146.15 respectively. Ollie Pope’s inclusion in the national squad has created a void in the third position. but it looks like Sam Curran will be taking the place after returning from the injury. Curran has scored 42 runs already at a strike rate of 175. He is outstanding with the ball too. the left-handed pacer has 5 wickets in 2 games including 4 for 14 against the Gloucestershire team. Laurie Evans and Jamie Overton will be looking to strengthen the top order.
Surrey has been given a boost by the addition of West Indian duo Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard. Narine was the most economical bowler of the IPL this season with an economy below 6. He has continued his form and is bowling at an economy of 4.25 for Surrey. Pollard’s form has been not up to the mark yet but Surrey will be hoping for him to catch it up as the tournament proceeds. Skipper Chris Jordan has lots of options in the bowling unit to help him. Along with him and Sam Curran, Reece Topley and Daniel Worrall have proven lethal for Surrey so far. Topley grabbed a brace against Gloucestershire for just 6 runs in 3 overs to help his team successfully defend the 129 runs target. In case of trouble, Jordan can go to Pollard to bowl those slow off-cutters.
Key Players: Sam Curran, Jason Roy, Will Jacks.

Things are a bit scary for Hampshire Royals. They are now without a win in their last 4 games including the semi-final of the last season. The key reason for the failure is that the batters are not able to accelerate the score throughout the innings. Except for James Fuller (150.87), Ross Whiteley (146.34), and Jack Weatherly (140), strike rates of all others are close to 100. In three games not a single batter from Hampshire has registered a half-century. Plus, they are scoring just above 7 runs per over. Skipper James Vince will have a tough task to take things back on track for this season.
Hampshire are majorly missing Scott Currie in their bowling attack. Currie finished last season as the leading wicket-taker for the Hampshire with 19 wickets at an economy of 7.87. But the pacer has just bowled two overs this season giving 27 runs without a wicket. Brad Wheal, Chris Wood, and Nathan Elis will keep bowling their full quota of overs along with Mason Crane controlling the spin. Wheal has taken 5 wickets in 3 games. But he is expensive in the middle and late overs. His economy is 10.41 which can be a concern for Hampshire while searching for their first win.

The T20 is expected to play under the clouds with no chances of rain. The temperature will range between 11 and 21°C. The wind will be flowing from the northeast at 16-17 kmh. The pitch is batting-friendly. The dew on the pitch makes it difficult for bowlers to control the ball in the later stages of the match. The outfield slows down and batters find it easy to hit the balls.
The match between Surrey and Hampshire will be played at The Kennington Oval, London. The venue holds a capacity of 23500 spectators and has hosted 103 tests, 75 ODIs & 16 T20Is so far.
In 16 T20Is, teams batting first have successfully defended the target 9 times. The average 1st innings score here is 150 which is 17 more than the 2nd innings. But the recent domestic T20 history depicts a different picture. The last 6 Vitality Blast T20 games are won by the team chasing the target. Hence, the team winning the toss should go with the trend and choose to bowl first.
If you see the recent history, Surrey is having a dream run against the Hampshire Royals. They have beaten Hampshire on 6 occasions in the last 10 T20s while conceding just once. Plus, Surrey have won both games comfortably. Hampshire, on the other hand, have lost their all games this season. It won’t be a difficult game for Surrey to overcome the lethargic Hampshire.
We predict that Surreywill defeat Hampshire.
