Sussex and Worcestershire are set to square off in another great 50 overs cricket action. Both sides square off in match 54 of the England Domestic One Day 2026 after last going head-to-head in 2023. The game will be played at the County Ground in Hove on August 7.

Sussex is renowned to be one of the best cricket clubs in England. But this edition, they are languishing at the bottom of Group B table with just one win from 5 games. Their opponents Worcestershire are just 4 points off the top three sides in the group with 3 wins and 2 losses.

This is an important game for either side, an opportunity for Sussex to resurrect their campaign or Worcestershire could close the gap to top three in the group. Both sides have historically played only twice and either side have won one game each.

Sussex Preview

Sussex have found the early stages of the England Domestic One Day Cup 2026 challenging in Group B. With only one win from five matches and a negative net run rate, they currently sit at the bottom of the table and will look to turn their form around when they face Worcestershire.

Their campaign opened with a narrow 12-run defeat to Glamorgan. They then suffered a 72-run loss to Durham and a heavy 184-run (D/L) defeat against Yorkshire. A five-wicket victory over Essex provided their only success so far, before a comprehensive 188-run defeat against Derbyshire in their most recent outing.

Batting has been led by Charlie Tear, who tops the charts with 223 runs from five innings at an average of 44.60. The young wicketkeeper-batter's best performance of 118 came against Durham.

Meanwhile Jack Carson has been consistently delivering every game for his side. He has contributed 215 runs from five innings, while Fynn Hudson-Prentice has scored 158 from four.

George Thomas (117) and Jack Leaning (103) are the other individuals to have crossed the 100 runs mark and have added useful support, though the side has often struggled to post or chase substantial totals consistently.

The bowling attack has been headed by Fynn Hudson-Prentice with 7 wickets from three matches. He was especially great against Glamorgan bagging a 5-fer but only got 2 in the following 2.

18-year-old pacer Freddie Price has taken 5 wickets from 4 innings, Toby Munt got 4 from four, while Henry Crocombe and Sean Hunt each claimed three wickets in single appearances against Derbyshire and Yorkshire respectively.

Sussex Predicted Playing XI:

Charlie Tear (WK), George Thomas, Joe Johnson, Danial Ibrahim, Jack Leaning, Jack Carson (C), Ollie Robinson, Freddy Price, Toby Munt, Henry Crocombe, Troy Henry.

The pitch at County Ground, Hove is generally balanced to batting-friendly in 50-over cricket. It offers good pace, true bounce and carry, allowing batters to play their shots confidently once they settle in. The relatively short boundaries and quick outfield help scoring rates. Pacers get useful seam movement and swing early with the new ball, especially with the sea breeze. The first innings average score is around 270.

Toss: To Bowl

At the County Ground in Hove, teams often prefer chasing. There is help for the bowlers early on when the surface is fresh. And if they can keep their opponents tight, chasing around 250-280 is expected at the venue. Last year, two out of three games were won by the bowling first side here.

Worcestershire are clear favourites. They sit on three wins from five and boast superior form, led by Jake Libby’s 257 runs and Fateh Singh’s outstanding 13 wickets. Sussex languish at the bottom with just one victory, relying mainly on Charlie Tear’s recent form and Jack Carson’s 215 runs. Despite the even head-to-head, Worcestershire’s balance should secure a comfortable win.
