Tournament: WOMENS BIG BASH LEAGUE 2019-20 | Format: t20 | Venue: W.A.C.A. Ground, Perth, Australia | Toss: To Bowl
Bet NowOn paper, from the points table, it might look like a sixth-ranked team is facing an eighth-ranked team. But it is way different than what it looks. Melbourne Stars haven’t opened their account yet and another loss might put their campaign in jeopardy. Moreover, their chances of finishing in the top four take a hit as well. On the other hand, there is Sydney Sixers who’ve played three games and have dominated two of them.
The Sixers started their 2019 season with a bang when they posted 192 batting first to show their batting might. It all came crashing down in the next encounter as they crumbled to an embarrassing 73 all out against the Brisbane Heat. In the third game, they came storming back and beat the Melbourne Stars comprehensively. The Stars have lost all their four games so far. They did come close to opening their account against Sydney Thunder but poor death bowling led to their downfall. With four losses, they are lying at the bottom of the table and also, have a pretty bad net run rate.
Skipper Ellyse Perry has led from the front. Be it with bat or ball, the star Aussie all-rounder has been everywhere. She’s scored runs, picked up wickets and effected run-outs as well. Perry has 147 runs in the tournament, which is the fourth-most overall so far. She has also picked up three wickets in as many games. Her opening partner Alyssa Healy has been good too. She’s scored 82 runs in three games but hasn’t gone past the 50-run mark. She is due a big score. At No. 3, Ashleigh Gardner hasn’t performed too badly either. The rest of the batting line-up hasn’t got a lot of chances. They collectively failed in that game where they were bowled out for 73 against the Heat.
The South African duo of Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp have done well with the ball. While the former played her first game of the season last game and took 2/18, Kapp has taken picked up four wickets in the tournament. Meanwhile, Sarah Aley and Hayley Silver-holmes have done decently with the ball as well. They have chipped in well and have contributed to the team’s success.

The batting has been the problem for the Melbourne Stars. While they’ve managed to score in excess of 130 on three occasions, they haven’t gone past the 150-mark. Most batters have been guilty of throwing away starts. Lizelle Lee has been the leading run-scorer for the Stars so far. She has amassed 111 runs in four innings. Mignon du Preez isn’t too far behind either. She has scored 94 runs but has constantly failed to make big scores.
Elyse Villani had a torrid start to this tournament but a fifty in the last game would boost her confidence. After scoring 40 in the first game, Erin Osborne’s batting has slipped. However, she is Stars’ leading wicket-taker with the ball. Madeline Penna was wonderful in the game against Sydney Thunder. The leg-spinner took 4/20 and was very impressive. The Stars will hope the likes of Kristen Beams (with the ball) and Nicole Faltum (with the bat) chip in a lot more and have a bigger impact.

Rain is predicted in the lead up of this game. However, it is expected to be bright and sunny on Sunday. While all the other games are afternoon starts at the WACA, this is the only morning start at the venue. The pitch is expected to be a good one to bat on and the batters should enjoy the ball coming on to the bat nicely.
This will be the fourth game in three days at the WACA in Perth. While there is one game on the 1st of November, there is a double-header on the 2nd which will be followed by this Sixers-Stars clash. The WACA track has somewhat lost its old venom and bounce it had. At the moment, the pitch is generally flat and the outfield is fast which aids shot-making.
The conditions in Perth are expected to be good for batting and teams might want to chase. It’s been a trend in this WBBL which may continue. With Stars having lost most of their games batting first and Sixers tasting some success while chasing in their last game, both teams might want to bowl first.
Sydney Sixers seem to be very strong on paper and have started the tournament decently as well. With the likes of Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner forming the Australian core and Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp adding their experience in the middle, the Sixers wear a formidable look and hence, they will start this game as favorites. They have also beaten the Stars already earlier in the tournament.
