Tasmania will take on New South Wales in the 15th Test of the Sheffield Shield 2023-24 season. The table toppers will be back at Hobart where they beat Queensland by 3 wickets earlier this season.
New South Wales have found their first win of the season after successive losses and look in great touch. Their recent win saw them deliver exceptionally in both departments.
NSW should be backing themselves to hand the hosts their first defeat of the season. Nathan Lyon, Chris Tremain, and Liam Hatcher will be crucial with the ball.
Tasmania were bowled out for 150 runs in their last outing at this venue against Queensland. It could be seen as a hiccup given how they’ve bounced back since then.
They’ve got a strong middle and lower order with players who can score big and take the side to a competitive total. It will be a tough contest between the NSW bowlers and the in-form batters of Tasmania.

Jordan Silk will be leading a strong overall squad against New South Wales in this match. There is Charlie Wakim who’s looked in great touch at number 3 while Matthew Wade and Beau Webster have made a big impact at 5 and 6.
However, Silk himself hasn’t made a lot of runs at number 4 since his 181-run knock against Western Australia. The captain’s form should be a concern for Tasmania going into this match.
The likes of Tremain and Hatcher will pose a tough challenge to Silk in this Test. NSW have even more wicket-takers in Bird and Dwarshius who’ve looked threatening of late.
As such, Wakim and Silk become crucial in the middle-order. A strong partnership is needed so that the lower order isn’t exposed to the moving ball in the first 40 overs of the game.
It is a deep batting lineup and that gives Tasmania an advantage in any contest this season. The bowlers haven’t been as successful in delivering consistent breakthroughs.
Nevertheless, they’ve got variety and should be able to trouble the opposition. Sam Rainbird, Bradley Hope, and Lawrence Neil-Smith will be the key players in the bowling department.

It was a great turnaround from NSW to win a Test by 10 wickets after having lost 2 matches in a row. They were bowled out for under 200 runs in each of their innings in those 2 losses.
Victoria bowled out NSW for 102 and 173. And prior to that, it was South Australia that humbled New South Wales bowling them out for 183 and 136 runs.
It was the bowlers who led the comeback from NSW as they bowled out Western Australia for 141 runs bowling first at the SCG in the last match. The momentum shifted and they were confident of winning the match from there.
There is still a lot to improve with the bat considering how only Moises Henriques and Oliver Davies made significant contributions with the bat in the last match.
Daniel Hughes has let everyone down at the top. There are a lot of expectations from the opening batter and if he goes out cheaply again, NSW could find themselves in trouble once again.
Batting all-rounder Blake Macdonald has also struggled to get going at number 3 and that is a big concern. Jason Sangha is a promising player at number 4 who’s been the up-and-coming player in the Aussie domestic circuit in the last few years.
A lot depends on the middle-order that also features Henriques, Oliver Davies, and Matthew Gilkes. It will not be an easy outing for NSW but it also is a great opportunity for a comeback with the bat given the conditions here.
Ryan Hackney, Daniel Hughes, Blake Macdonald, Jason Sangha, Moises Henriques (c), Oliver Davies, Matthew Gilkes (wk), Jackson Bird, Nathan Lyon, Chris Tremain, Liam Hatcher

The weather will be cloudy with a high of 17 degrees Celsius. There could be some movement through the air for the swing bowlers in these weather conditions making for an exciting first hour of play.
The pitch is slow at first and flattens out as the match progresses. There are a lot of runs on offer on this surface and both teams should be confident of chasing down any score in the 4th innings.
Bellerive Oval in Hobart will be the venue for this clash. There is a more even contest between the bat and the ball at this venue and we reckon it will be a close contest between the two sides. A 350+ score should be a competitive 1st innings total at this venue.
It gets easier to bat on this pitch as the game progresses and we reckon both teams would choose to bowl first and back themselves to chase down a total at this venue. The visitors, especially, have an in-form bowling attack and should be keen on backing them to restrict Tasmania to a low 1st innings score.
The visitors will be coming here with a lethal bowling attack that features some of the best wicket-takers in Australia. However, they’ve been struggling to put runs on the board and the hosts will look to capitalize on that. Tasmania has an overall strong squad that ticks all the boxes and should be able to get the upper hand in this match as well. Tasmania will start as our favorites to win this Test.
