The second half of the Namibia T20I series gets underway at Windhoek with table toppers United States taking on United Arab Emirates at the Wanderers cricket ground in Windhoek.
At the halfway stage, with each of the three teams having played two games, United States is at the top of the tree with 4 points. United Arab Emirates, which lost its earlier encounter to United States, is sitting in the second spot with 2 points.
Both teams are similar in more ways than one, especially with the top-heavy batting group and the presence of some handy spinners in the XI. United States, which has had a wonderful run since the world cup, will be looking to defeat United Arab Emirates one more time to seal the top spot, where the Middle East nation would be hoping for two wins from two matches to dislodge the American nation from the top.
With 7 wins and 5 losses from 12 matches, 2024 has proven to be a fruitful year for United Arab Emirates.
All it could managed from the 6 six matches was just 3 wins, but it has produced some fine performances with both bat and ball to string together a few victories. It was on a four-match winning streak before losing to USA the other day, a team which it had never lost to previously. They let the USA opening pair get away to an electric start in the powerplay, 62/0 from 6 overs. They knocked back a couple of wickets after a few overs, but got shocked a bit seeing the counterattack from Saiteja Mukkamalla.
With him departing, Ali Naseer came on to bowl in the last five, and picked up three wickets in the 19th over to help his team keep USA down to 175.
The UAE bowling group gave away 16 extras, which is unacceptable at this level. UAE openers, who put together 130 runs against Namibia, went out to the middle looking for a similar start, but they were sent back to the pavilion inside the first five overs. Vishnu Sukumaran scored 36 but he found no support from the other end, leaving UAE trailing at 94 for 6 in the thirteenth over. Basil Hameed came down the order and waged a lone battle, striking a few lusty blows to reduce the margin of defeat.
Muhammad Waseem(c), Aryansh Sharma, Vishnu Sukumaran, Asif Khan, Rahul Chopra, Syed Haider Shah(w), Basil Hameed, Ali Naseer, Aayan Afzal Khan, Junaid Siddique, Muhammad Jawadullah.
United States of America performed poorly in the Netherlands T20 tri series, going down to the hosts Netherlands twice. A lone win over Canada was all they could salvage in that tour. But they’ve kicked off the Namibia leg with a bang, winning two out of two matches. Another win will solidify their spot at the top of the table.
20-year old Saiteja Mukkamalla at the top of the order has impressed again, scoring his second fifty in four matches. His 85 off 54 against UAE was instrumental in USA clinching the win. His opening partner Andries Gous put his hand up and made a fluent, stroke-ful 81 off 50 against Namibia to help USA to 181.
In the bowling department, Nosthusha Kenjige has troubled opposition batsmen a lot, picking up 5 wickets from 2 matches at a strike rate of 9.60. Abhishek Paradkar has been amongst the wickets, scalping 4 wickets from 2 matches so far. Harmeet Singh who was easily their most economical bowler over in Netherlands hasn’t been able to create the same impact here though. United States of America would feel pretty confidenct coming into this fixture, knowing that one win is all that it takes for them to come away with the series win here. And that’s all they would be aiming for.
Smit Patel, Andries Gous (wk), Saiteja Mukkamalla, Nitish Kumar, Shayan Jahangir, Harmeet Singh, Jasdeep Singh (c), Nosthush Kenjige, Abhishek Paradkar, Ayan Desai, Juanoy Drysdale.
The batting strip at this venue has been fantastic to bat on and the batsmen have made merry here most of the times, as evidenced in the match aggregates so far: 450 in the first match, 335 in the next one, and 349 in the latest fixture. It’s just not the batsmen teeing off, left arm bowlers in particular have reaped rewards for their bowling efforts, whether it is pace on or pace off. The weather forecast for the game is quite clear and we’re in for another exciting T20 between the top two teams in this series.
The match will be held at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia.
Teams that batted first have yet to lose a game in the series so far. And that’s a clear indication that the captain winning the toss this match would most likely choose to have a bat first.
United States of America are on a roll this series. Playing aggressively with the bat early on and bowling smartly paying heed to the conditions has brought them good results. There’s not much to separate them and the UAE side, but we think the USA team have momentum on their side. And that’s invaluable in T20 games. USA to win.
We are backing United States of America as winners of this contest.
