Victoria shall aim for a perfect start to the season as they take on New South Wales at home in the first game of Marsh One-Day Cup 2022-23. Victoria had a poor season last year and finished at the bottom of the points table. New South Wales had a heartbreak in the final, going down against Western Australia

Victoria hasn’t defeated New South Wales since 2019, likely affecting their confidence. The side would miss Nic Maddison, one of their key batsmen, which is a big blow to the team. New South Wales has a strong group of players, making them confident. It is the first game of a new season, and we must wait and see which side emerges as the winner.

Victoria Preview

There are several fresh faces in the squad for this season. Peter Handscomb would like to put behind the upset of the last season. They had a terrible tournament, finishing at the bottom of the points table with just one win. Handscomb would know his opponent’s strengths and expect a solid show from his players in the season opener.

Opener Will Pucovski shall have to play a vital role in opening the batting for the team. He must set up a big partnership with Marcus Harris. Handscomb needs to play an anchor’s role in the middle order, with Matthew Short and Jonathan Merlo in the middle order. The side wants Mackenzie Harvey and Will Sutherland to add quick runs down the order.

Their bowling performance was poor last season, and they must improve in this department. Scott Boland and Todd Murphy need to do well with the new ball as their opponents have a strong batting line-up. Sutherland had looked good, and he will have an important role to play in the middle overs along with Jonathan Merlo and Jon Holland.

Victoria Predicted Playing XI:

Peter Handscomb (c & wk), Marcus Harris, Scott Boland, Jon Holland, Will Sutherland, Mackenzie Harvey, Jonathan Merlo, Jonathan Merlo, Matthew Short, Todd Murphy, Will Pucovski

New South Wales Preview

Kurtis Patterson would be leading the side this season, and he shall like a repeat of last year’s performance, where the side did exceedingly well. They have a strong batting line-up and a bowling attack that can take on any opponent. Patterson shall look for an excellent start to the season and earn their first points

They have a strong opening combination in Matthew Gilkes and Daniel Hughes and the pair needs to deliver a good start. Moises Henriques is an experienced player, and he shall like to add runs with Kurtis Patterson  in the middle order. Jack Edwards, Sean Daniel Sams, and Liam Hatcher are powerful strikers of the ball, and they can score quick runs.

Ben Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott form a strong new ball attack for the team, and they shall look to deliver early breakthroughs in the game. Nathan Lyon brings in a lot of experience to this attack and he will look to do well in the middle overs along with Liam Hatcher. Sams and Hayden Kerr add to the side’s bowling options making it strong.

New South Wales Predicted Playing XI:

Kurtis Patterson (c), Matthew Gilkes (wk), Jack Edwards, Sean Abbott, Nathan Lyon, Ben Dwarshuis, Liam Hatcher, Moises Henriques, Daniel Sams, Daniel Hughes, Hayden Kerr

Weather Conditions

The skies over Melbourne would be overcast on September 23. The track has been a tough one to bat over the last few seasons as the ball moves and makes it difficult for the batsmen. They have to get used to the pace and bounce to do well. The side batting first in this game would be happy with a score of above 280 on this track.

Venue Details

The pitch at Junction Oval, Melbourne, balances it between the bat and the ball. It rewards batsmen who play to the merit of the ball. Fast bowlers have also done as there is a lot for them on this surface with the new ball. Spinners haven’t had a great record at this venue as there isn’t much help from them on this surface.

Toss: To Bowl

The surface here assists the bowlers at the start of the game. We have seen sides chasing the score do well in the past as the wicket eases in the second innings. Hence the side that wins the toss here would have no hesitation in inviting the opposition to bat first.

The stakes are high for Victoria in this game. They would look for a perfect start at home after the poor show in the last season. Their bowling looks weak, and the side would need the main bowlers to deliver the goods. New South Wales would carry confidence from the last season. They have a strong bowling attack, and this would make them favorites here.
