The defending champions, Western Australia, have had a mixed season so far. In the previous season, Western Australia defeated Tasmania in the finals via big margin of 377 runs to clinch the Sheffield Shield title. They had lost both their encounters against the current opponents, Western Australia, who went on to win the championship the last time.

In this season, however, South Australia looks like a completely different side. They have played six games so far, winning three and drawing two of them with just one loss. They are currently placed at the top of the points table with 29.93 points. Just like Western Australia, South Australia started the season with two wins in the first three games. After the draw against a strong team such as New South Wales, South Australia won against Queensland by 129 runs, followed by a win against Victoria by 138 runs. Wicket Keeper Alex Carey was the man of the match with a century and nine catches in the game against Queensland. Against Victoria, it was their bowler Ben Manenti who took six wickets and scored a not-out half century to help South Australia to a big win.

South Australia's only defeat came against New South Wales in their 4th game.
