Western Australia Preview

The defending champions, Western Australia, have had a mixed season so far. In the previous season, Western Australia defeated Tasmania in the finals via big margin of 377 runs to clinch the Sheffield Shield title. They had ended the league stage at the top of the table with 5 wins, 3 draws, and 2 losses in 10 games. This season, however, they have already suffered 2 losses in the first 6 games.

Western Australia started the season like the champions should. They won two of their first three games and looked set for a good season yet again. However, in the last three games, they lost a couple of games against Victoria and New South Wales and are currently placed 4th in the points table with 23.91 points. What should certainly be translated more is that these are not small defeats. In the game against Victoria, they lost by 8 tickets. And against New South Wales, they lost by an innings and 68 runs. Both of Western Australia's wins have come against Tasmania, who are placed currently at the bottom of the table.

In the game against Victoria, Western Austria were bundled out for just 167 runs in the first inning. Despite scoring a good 325 in the second innings, Victoria got over the line with 8 wickets to spare. In the game against New South Wales at Sydney, in good batting conditions, Western Australia were bundled out twice for low scores. They were all out for 211 in the first innings and were all out for 184 in the second innings, losing the match by an innings and 68 runs.

Hilton Cartwright leads the batting charts with 745 runs in the last 8 matches at an average of 43.8, followed by Jayden Goodwin who has 677 runs in the last 9 games at an average close to 40. Cameron Gannon has 39 wickets in the last 9 matches, followed by Corey Rocchiccioli with 35 wickets in the last 9 games. In the previous season, Western Australia defeated South Australia in both the encounters. But South Australia are a different beast this time. Can Western Australia bounce back to defeat South Australia a third time in a row in their last three head-to-head encounters?

Key players: Jayden Goodwin, Hilton Cartwright, Cameron Gannon, Corey Rocchiccioli

South Australia Preview

South Australia have done exceptionally well so far, given the disastrous season they had last year. In 10 matches, South Australia lost 6 in the previous season and ended the league stage in 5th place. They had lost both their encounters against the current opponents, Western Australia, who went on to win the championship the last time.

In this season, however, South Australia looks like a completely different side. They have played six games so far, winning three and drawing two of them with just one loss. They are currently placed at the top of the points table with 29.93 points. Just like Western Australia, South Australia started the season with two wins in the first three games. After the draw against a strong team such as New South Wales, South Australia won against Queensland by 129 runs, followed by a win against Victoria by 138 runs. Wicket Keeper Alex Carey was the man of the match with a century and nine catches in the game against Queensland. Against Victoria, it was their bowler Ben Manenti who took six wickets and scored a not-out half century to help South Australia to a big win.

South Australia's only defeat came against New South Wales in their 4th game. After getting bowled out for 110 in the first innings, South Australia could not come back in the game and lost by an innings and one run against New South Wales. However, after a draw against Western Australia in the next game, they came back strongly against a weak team Tasmania to win by two runs in their 6th match. Jason Sangha scored 151 in the first innings followed by 61 in the second innings to win the Player of the Match award. Given the form South Australia in, they would fancy a win against Western Australia.

Key players: Henry Hunt, Jason Sangha, Nathan McAndrew, Ben Manenti

These are quite even conditions and the team winning the toss should bat first here given that it's a multi day game.

This is a contest between South Australia who came back strongly after a disastrous season last year, currently at top of the table after 6 games, against Western Australia who are defending champions but have had an average season so far this year. With just one loss, South Australia are placed first in the points table, whereas with a couple of losses, Western Australia are placed fourth. Their previous encounter this season ended in a draw. We believe South Australia have a slight edge over Western Australia in this game.

We predict that South Australia will defeat Western Australia.
