Kent will be confident while coming to Birmingham to face Warwickshire in their second match of the county season. Kent have a few reasons to be confident of beating the home team in their own backyard.

The Sam Billings-led team has not only won their last Test but also have defeated Warwickshire on this ground last year. Kent were bowled out for 165 runs batting first at Edgbaston and yet managed to secure a 177-run win over Warwickshire last season.

Alex Davies and Sam Hain’s hundreds in the last Test will boost the home team’s confidence as they look for their first win. Rhodes and Yates are other key batsmen in the top order for Warwickshire.

The batting lineup is deep with Michael Burgess coming in at number 7. Kent, on the other hand, feature Joe Denly in the middle-order who scored a hundred in Kent’s win over Warwickshire last year. In their first match of this season, Kent saw Zak Crawley and Ben Compton deliver big knocks at the top.

Warwickshire Preview

Will Rhodes will be hoping for a better home run this season after having won just 2 of their 7 home games last year. There seem to be some major changes in the bowling department. Craig Miles and Danny Briggs are out while Hasan Ali will join the pace attack.

The Pakistani pacers picked 3 wickets in the last game while O Hannon-Dalby led the charts with 6 wickets in the match. In addition to Dalby, another key pacer to watch out for in this side is Ed Barnard. On a well-balanced pitch at Edgbaston, Barnard and O Hannon-Dalby could deliver an impactful performance.

Robert Yates and Will Rhodes are also part of the top-order and will be expected to make significant contributions to the total. Most of the batting strength of this team lies in the top 4. After Saim Hain at number 4, there is Dan Mousley and Ed Barnard at 5 and 6 who are bowlers who can also bat.

And then it is Michael Burgess at number 7 who has played against some of the legendary bowlers at a young age and is a promising talent.

The top 4 need to make most of the batting conditions and get as many runs as they can early in the innings. In any condition, Warwickshire shouldn’t be relying on their lower middle-order or else, they would find themselves in deep trouble.

Warwickshire Predicted Playing XI:

Alex Davies, Robert Yates, Will Rhodes (c), Sam Hain, Dan Mousley, Ed Barnard, Michael Burgess (wk), Jacob Bethell , Hasan Ali, Chris Rushworth, Oliver Hannon-Dalby

Kent Preview

Kent finished at number 5 last season with just 4 wins and 5 losses from 14 matches. However, their win over Warwickshire at Edgbaston was definitely on of their best victories in the county championship.

To go from 165 all-out in the 1st innings to winning the match by a margin of 177 runs was a special feat. Navdeep Saini and Matt Milnes bagged 7 wickets each in that match for Kent.

However, neither of these two bowlers are part of the squad this season. There is no Matt Henry in the bowling attack either. However, Matthew Quinn, Grant Stewart, and Joey Evison have emerged as the new match-winners this season.

These three were exceptional with the ball against Northamptonshire leading Kent to their first win of 2023. While not many batters shined except for Zak Crawley and Ben Compton, they can bounce back at Edgbaston. There is plenty of talent and depth in this batting lineup.

Skipper Sam Billings comes in at number 7 followed by Jordan Cox at 6. Bell-Drummon and Joe Denly at 3 and 4 are other promising middle order batsmen who could lay a strong foundation for Billings and Cox to build on.

Overall, Kent packs a strong punch with the right kind of players in every department and they would carry their winning momentum into this Test.

Kent Predicted Playing XI:

Zak Crawley, Ben Compton, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Joe Denly, Jack Leaning, Jordan Cox, Sam Billings (c & wk), Joey Evison, Grant Stewart, Michael Hogan, Matthew Quinn

Weather Conditions

The pitch is batting-friendly but also offers help for the bowlers. There have been many impressive bowling spells on this ground last season. There will be scattered showers on day 1 of the match with a high of 11 degrees Celsius. The weather will be mostly cloudy until day 3 with showers on day 2 as well.

Venue Details

Edgbaston in Birmingham will be the venue for this match. It is the home ground for Warwickshire who haven’t been exceptional at the venue in recent times. There can be some swing on offer for the new-ball bowlers. The average 1st innings score at this venue is 306 while that in the 2nd innings is 316 runs. Teams should be aiming for a 350+ total if batting first at this venue.

Toss: To Bowl

Looking at the stats, there’s not much of a difference between the number of wins batting first or second. There are certain vulnerabilities in the batting lineups of both teams and bowling first would allow them to exploit them and gain the upperhand in the match.

The rain will affect the game considerably but if the bowlers will have their say given the overcast conditions, we are likely to have a result. Though Kent weren't’ exceptional with the bat in their opening Test of the season, they will have an edge in this contest given their overall squad while the hosts have plenty of work to do. There is hope in the batting department for Warwickshire after the two centuries from the top-order batters but their middle and lower order isn’t very reliable. Kent will start as favourites in our match prediction.

Our prediction is for Kent to win the match
