The final stage of the 2023 County Championship has commenced. Surrey is currently at the top of the table in Division One. This Sunday, Warwickshire will clash with Northamptonshire at Edgbaston. Both teams haven’t had the best of seasons this time and are coming off huge innings defeats. Warwickshire are in the No. 5 position currently with 130 points, while Northamptonshire are languishing at the bottom with just 61 points. This game will be an opportunity for both teams to build some winning momentum and end the season on a high.
Warwickshire are coming off a huge loss of an innings and 97 runs against Surrey at Kennington Oval. They won the toss and chose to field first. However, their bowlers weren’t up to the task, and Surrey plundered 396 runs in their first innings. They didn’t need to bat again, as Warwickshire were dismissed for 161 and 138 in their reply.
It was a performance that Warwickshire would like to forget in a hurry and go back to the drawing board.
Key Players
Sam Hain has been the team’s most successful batter this season, amassing 676 runs in 14 innings at an average of 52. He has three hundreds and two fifties to his name.
22-year-old Dan Mousley has done a fantastic job in the middle-order, with 514 runs in 15 innings at an average of 34.33. The youngster shown a lot of promise and can develop into a star player for the team in the coming seasons.
Chris Rushworth has led Warwickshire’s bowling department this year. The right-arm fast bowler has grabbed 43 wickets in 17 innings at an average of 19.60.
Oliver Hannon-Dalby, with 37 wickets in 19 innings, has shared the new ball with Rushworth, and is another bowler worth backing in this team.
Also keep an eye out for Ed Barnard. The seam bowler has had an off-color season, but looked in great rhythm in the last match, where he ended up with figures of 5-66.
Kraigg Brathwaite, Will Rhodes (c), Dan Mousley, Sam Hain, Chris Benjamin, Ed Barnard, Michael Burgess (wk), Henry Brookes, Danny Briggs, Chris Rushworth, Oliver Hannon-Dalby
Northamptonshire have won just one match this season – against Middlesex back in April. They too are coming off an innings defeat – their fifth of this season. After being asked to bat first by Lancashire at Northampton, Northamptonshire were dismissed for just 232 on a good batting wicket. Lancashire then posted a massive total of 524 in reply and went to bowl the Northants out for 266 to register an emphatic innings and a 26-run victory.
Key Players
Sam Whiteman has been the standout player for Northamptonshire this season. The No. 3 batter has collected 719 runs in 21 innings at an average of 37.84. He has smashed two hundreds and three fifties, including scores of 79 and 54 in the previous game against Lancashire.
Rob Keogh (583 runs in 19 innings at 34.29) and Saif Zaib (474 runs in 16 innings at 31.60) have been their most consistent middle-order batters.
You can also back opener Emilio Gay. He has only played 7 matches, but scored 456 runs already at an average of 32.57.
In the bowling department, Jack White was stood out. The new ball bowler has taken 35 wickets in 15 innings at an average of 29.08.
Ben Sanderson has provided him with good support, scalping 19 wickets in 10 innings at an average of 32.94.
Unfortunately, none of the other bowlers have left a mark. This is one of the major reasons for Northamptonshire’s poor performance this year.
Hasan Azad, Emilio Gay, Sam Whiteman, Luke Procter (c), Rob Keogh, Saif Zaib, Justin Broad, Lewis McManus (wk), Tom Taylor, Ben Sanderson, Jack White
Edgbaston's pitch has been known to favor seam and swing bowling, particularly during the first couple of days. It offers pace and bounce, which seam bowlers will enjoy. With the overhead conditions likely to be mostly cloudy on all four days of the match, fast bowlers will get consistent movement off the air. Batters must be watchful early on, but as the game progresses, the pitch becomes more conducive to stroke play.
The weather in Birmingham will be mostly cloudy on all four days of the match, with chances of rain on the second and fourth days.
The highest total posted in Edgbaston this year in County Championship Division One is Warwickshire’s 453-4 (dec.) against Kent. However, it hasn’t exactly been a high-scoring venue, as totals above 300 have been posted only twice in five matches this year. The team batting first should look to post a total of at least 300 runs.
Three of the five matches played at Edgbaston this year have been won by the team batting second. With the conditions likely to be cloudy on the first day, the team winning the toss is likely to field first to get some early wickets with the new ball.
Northamptonshire has been unsuccessful in defeating Warwickshire in their previous five meetings. Given their performance this season, they are unlikely to do so again this year. Although Warwickshire have themselves been below par, when compared to Northamptonshire, they look pretty balanced. Both their batting and bowling units have decent depth, while the Northants are primarily dependent on their batters to bail them out. Looking at Northamptonshire’s listless bowling unit, we reckon Warwickshire should be able to dominate this contest.
Back Warwickshire as the winners of this match.
