West Indies would have to battle it out against New Zealand in the 1st game of the three-match series at Barbados. The hosts lost the T20 series, and they would look for a better show in the ODIs. New Zealand on the other hand would be confident as they have most of their key players in good form going into this contest.
West Indies come here with nine straight losses in this format of the game, and this would be worrying them. They would look to do well in this game. New Zealand has won the last 10 games in a row, and they are riding good form. West Indies must produce a special performance to win this game and it remains to be seen if they can do it.
Nicholas Pooran has a big challenge on his hand. They did poorly in the T20s apart from the win in the last game and going through a rough patch in ODIs. The side has talent, but lack of consistency has been a major problem for them. Their opponents are in good form and Pooran shall like to see an inspiring performance from his players in this game as they look to avoid starting another series with a loss.
Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers shall have to do well at the top as the side would need a good start in the game. Shimron Hetmyer coming in adds to the side’s strength and he will have to do well with Brandon King and Shamarah Brooks in the middle order. Pooran is an excellent striker, and he will have to do well in the finishers’ role with Jason Holder and Keemo Paul down the order.
Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder would have to strike early in the game as the Kiwis have a very powerful top order. Jayden Seales and Keemo Paul shall need to do well in the middle order for the side to be in a comfortable position in the game. Mayers and Akeal Hosein shall look to do well in the supporting role.

Kane Williamson would head into this game with confidence. His side has done well in recent games, and they ticked all the boxes during the recent T20 series. Their batsmen have been in good form and the side would like them to continue with the same momentum. Williamson would be aware of West Indies’ strengths and not like to take them lightly.
Martin Guptill and Devon Conway make a formidable opening pair and the side would like a good start from them. Kane Williamson brings vast experience to the table, and he would look to add quick runs with Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell in the middle order. They would expect big hits from James Neesham and Glenn Phillips down the order as both these players can hit the ball hard.
Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson form a strong new ball pair and they would look to bend their backs on a wicket that won’t have much for them. Santner and Ish Sodhi would enjoy these conditions and the pair would aim to do maximum damage. Neesham and Michael Bracewell make it a well-balanced bowling attack.

The skies over Barbados would be slightly cloudy on August 17. The wicket would be slightly difficult one where the ball isn’t expected to come nicely onto the bat creating doubts in the minds of batsmen. The side that bats first in this game shall be happy with a score of 280 runs on the board.
Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados has a difficult batting surface. The ball doesn’t come onto the bat nicely and this often leads to false strokes from the batsmen. The wicket is slow and doesn’t have much on the surface for the fast bowlers. On the other hand, spinners have enjoyed success over the years as the ball stops on the batsmen.
In the recent games played at this venue we have seen the sides batting first have an advantage. The wicket here is best for batting in the 1st innings and the side chasing the score has found it difficult on a wicket that keeps slowing down. The side winning the toss in this game should have little hesitation in batting first.
West Indies would be under pressure after the series loss in the T20s. Their recent form in ODIs hasn’t been great either and the side has struggled on most occasions. They will need to produce a good team performance here for them to win. New Zealand has enjoyed success in the last few weeks, and this would up its confidence. The Kiwis are in form and shall start favorites in this game.
