West Indies Women have secured the T20I series against Ireland after winning the second match comfortably by 8 wickets. Captain Hayley Matthews led from the front once again as her all-round show buried the visitors. Ireland Women haven’t been able to put much of a fight, and it will be a supreme challenge for them to pick themselves up and avoid a 0-3 whitewash. The final game of the series will be played at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on July 9.
With another stellar all-round performance, Hayley Matthews spearheaded West Indies to a commanding win in the second T20I. Matthews first delivered a miserly spell of 1-24 in 4 overs that helped restrict Ireland to just 113-7 in their 20 overs. Then, her solid knock of 50 off 39 balls as the opener set the chase for the team. In the first T20I too, Matthews was at her all-round best, taking 3-22 with her spin and scoring a valuable 37 off 42 balls in the chase.
It goes without saying that Matthews will be West Indies’ MVP in the final match as well.
While the other batters haven’t had a chance to shine, and have struggled a bit on this slow surface, we think Shemaine Campbelle (167 runs in the last 10 matches at a strike rate of 81.46) will have an important role to play in the third T20I. Chinelle Henry, who scored a breezy unbeaten 22 off 12 balls in the previous game, is another batter to look forward to.
In the bowling department, apart from Matthews, Shamilia Connell (8 wickets in the last 10 matches at an economy of 6.78) will also be handy here. The fast bowler has kept things tight and will again ask questions of the Irish batters. Also don't overlook medium pacer Cherry Ann Fraser, who has taken 3 wickets at an economy of just 5.42 this series.

Ireland Women have unfortunately been let down by their batting in this series. In the two T20Is, they managed totals of 112 and 113 only. Barring captain Laura Delany (54 runs in 2 innings) none of the other batters have looked comfortable against the West Indian bowlers. Orla Prendergast has had a disappointing series, managing only 13 runs in the two games. However, she is a fine T20I batter, and we are backing her to play some role in this match with the bat.
Opener Amy Hunter (48 runs in 2 matches this series at a strike rate of 98) has looked good in patches, and might finally play a big knock in this game.
Arlene Kelly has been the only star of Ireland’s bowling unit this series. The medium pacer has picked up 4 wickets in the two games at an economy of just 5.42. Ava Canning hasn’t taken any wickets, but has managed to keep things tight, going for an economy of just 4.33 - the second-best in the series. Delany has done a decent job with the ball as well and we expect her to continue the work in the final game.

The pitch at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium has been slow and the ball hasn’t come on the bat easily. Batters have struggled to get going from the start and need to face a few balls before getting used to the slowness of the surface. Spinners get plenty of purchase here and will again trouble batters. Seam bowlers too will get some movement off the pitch. Slower balls and cutters will work well on this surface. The pitch does tend to ease out by the second half.
The weather in Gris Islet during the match will be cloudy and windy, with a shower or two expected. The windy weather should help the seam bowlers get more movement off the air.
The average first inning score at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in women’s T20Is is 118. The highest total posted at the venue is 187/5 buy West Indies Women against Sri Lanka Women in 2018. A target of around 130-140 runs should be a winning one in the third ODI.
Both matches in this series at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium have been won by the team chasing. In fact, each of the last three international matches here have been won by the chasing side. Hence, the team winning the toss is likely to field first.
Ireland have been unable to beat West Indies after five T20Is, and it’s unlikely that they will be able to change their fortunes anytime soon. Their batting has struggled to get going on this pitch, and most of their batters have looked out of sorts. Their best chance is to get to Hayley Matthews cheaply and target the other batters, who haven’t had much chance to play. West Indies, however, bat deep, and even if Matthews fails, they should be able to get past this rather tame Irish bowling.
We are backing West Indies Women to win the last match and win the series 3-0.
