In Division 1 of the 4-Day Franchise Series, all teams have played a game each and only the Warriors have won a match. All of the rest are in search of their first win of the season.
Rocks’ skipper Janneman Malan will be eager to turn things around for his side. Rocks dominated the 1st half of their match against the Warriors but were outplayed by the opposition in the 2nd innings.
After both Rocks and Warriors finished their 1st innings, Malan’s team was on top and in a comfortable position to secure a win. What the Rocks will be looking for in this match is consistency from the batters in both innings.
Western Province also had a grip on their first match which ended in a draw. It was the rain that played spoilsport as only 6 overs were bowled on Day 2 and 40 on Day 3.
Skipper Verreynne will be confident of his team’s chances here at Centurion with some reliable batters in the middle and lower order coupled with an in-form bowler in Hendricks.
Kyle Verrreynne led the batting effort for Western Province in their recent match. He was part of multiple partnerships helping his side reach a decent 1st innings total.
Earlier this year, Verreynee scored his first international Test hundred on South Africa’s tour of New Zealand at the Hagley Oval.
The 22-year-old Mihali Mpongwana is a real discovery for the Western Province. The right-arm fast bowler scored 77 runs at number 8. He was part of a 65-runs stand for the 7th wicket alongside skipper Verreynee and a 64-runs partnership with Hendricks for the 8th wicket.
These two partnerships were crucial for Western Province and set them on course for a good 1st innings total. George Linde, a batting all-rounder, coming in at number 7, is another key player for Western Province in the lower order.
Linde, another Test player with 3 appearances for South Africa has played at number 7 for the national side as well. Tony de Zorzi who’s been part of T20 franchises was out for a duck in his last innings.
The last time Zorzi played against Rocks, the opener scored 129 runs at Paarl. Yaseen Vallie, his opening partner from last season was seen at number 3 in the last match.
Vallie is an experienced player in the domestic circuit and will be one to watch out for. Mpongwana, Bueran Hendricks, and Nandre Burger are the key players in the bowling department.
Tony de Zorzi, Edward Moore, Yaseen Vallie, Daniel Smith, Kyle Verreynne (c & wk), Aviwe Mgijima, George Linde, Mihlali Mpongwana, Beuran Hendricks, Nandre Burger, Tshepo Moreki
Last season, Rocks lost 2 of their first 5 matches while the rest ended in a draw. They have gotten off to a similar start this year as well losing their opening game of the season.
Rocks have a new skipper this year in Janneman Malan who started the season with a brilliant knock of 132 runs at number 4. He was joined by the number 3 batsman S van Zyl who scored 91 runs off just 92 balls.
After losing two quick wickets, Rocks were two down for 39 runs, and these two batters added 111 runs for the 3rd wicket. There are many batting options in this squad that the Rocks can rely on.
Leus du Plooy and batting all-rounder Farhaan Behardien were not part of the XI in the last game but are impactful batsmen. Plooy has played in the English domestic circuit and has proven to be a reliable middle-order batsman.
In the lower order, Rocks have wicket-keeper batsman Clyde Fortuin and bowling all-rounder Shaun von Berg. It was the duo of Fortuin and von Berg that helped steady the Rocks’ 2nd innings in the last game.
Hardus Viljoen, a right-arm fast-medium bowler is also a handy batter lower down the order. He will be one to watch out for in this lineup. The bowling attack looks good but wasn’t consistent in their recent outing. And that will be a concern coming into this game for the Rocks.
Ruan Terblanche, Isma-eel Gafieldien, Stiaan van Zyl, Janneman Malan (c), Michael Copeland, Clyde Fortuin (wk), Khwezi Gumede, Hardus Viljoen, Bamanye Xenxe, Shaun von Berg, Achille Cloete
The pitch at SuperSport in Centurion is one of the quickest in South Africa. With the ball coming onto the bat nicely, the batsmen will also enjoy playing their strokes freely. The weather is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 30 degrees Celsius.
SuperSport Park, home to Titans, will host this fixture between Western Province and Rocks. The average 1st innings score at this venue is 329 runs while the average 2nd innings score is 321. This is probably why the toss doesn’t make a big difference as the 1st innings lead is likely to be minimal.
Of the 27 Tests played at this ground, teams batting first have won 12 while teams batting second have won 11. That shows the toss hasn’t played much of a role at this venue in the red-ball format. Nevertheless, getting over 300 runs on the board batting first would put the team in a comfortable position.
There are some promising players in both teams. The middle and lower order of both these sides features some reliable and consistent batters. However, considering the current form of both teams, and the inconsistency of Rocks, we reckon Western Province have a slight edge in this contest. Western Province will start as favourites in our match prediction.
