The second half of the County Championship Division 2 started last week with one win and three draws. With the battle for the qualification getting tougher week by week, Yorkshire will host Sussex at The Headingley, Leeds between 19th to 23 rd July from 3:30 pm onwards. Both teams drew their last games against Worcestershire and Derbyshire respectively to add points to the tables.

Yorkshire played against Worcestershire at New Road, Worcester. Batting first, Yorkshire’s opening pair registered a partnership of 177 runs. Finley Bean scored a back-to-back hundred for the Yorks. A half-century from the middle order batter George Hill took Yorkshire past 400 in the first innings. Adam Finch took five wickets for Worcestershire.

Yorkshire bowlers put their magic on the field to take out half of the hosts for 87. But a 36 over stand between Finch and Ben Gibbon shattered the dreams of Yorkshire to register a comfortable victory. Ben Coad’s 5 wickets restricted Worcestershire to 242. The rain reduced the hopes of Yorkshire after forcing a follow-on. Worcestershire saved the test by losing just two wickets for 142 in the second innings.

Sussex remained unbeaten and took their points tally to 106. They are now in third place with 1 win and 8 draws. Yorkshire are currently sitting in sixth place with 80 points.

Yorkshire Preview

County Championships’ most successful team is struggling this season with just one victory and two losses. Adam Lyth and Finley Bean will open the innings for Yorkshire. Lyth has 196 runs in the last three games with two half-centuries. Finley Bean has found his form with back-to-back hundreds in the last two games. He is Yorkshire’s leading run-scorer with 569 runs at an average of 47.41. Though he is riding high with his performances, Adam Lyth will be the batter to watch out for in this game.

With Shan Masood gone on international duty, James Wharton will likely come in third place. He has 94 runs in 3 innings so far. David Malan’s availability is still under wraps. If he is not available, George Hill will have an added responsibility to anchor the middle order. Hill has 403 runs in 12 innings with 1 century and 4 half-centuries. He has also produced 12 wickets with the ball. Skipper Jonathan Tattersall and Matthew Revis will team up with Hill in the middle order.

Sussex Preview

Sussex have been unbeaten this season. And the credit goes to their balanced batting lineup. That is why they have not missed Cheteshwar Pujara yet. Tom Clark and Tom Hain will open the innings for Sussex. The duo had put a 150-run partnership in the last game. Clark and Hain have 723 runs between them with 6 half-centuries. Just when you think that two Toms form will be the key for Sussex, the third Tom, Skipper Tom Alsop is more dangerous than the openers. At number three, Alsop has scored 569 runs at an average of 47.41 with two centuries.

James Coles will be the batter to watch out for. Coles scored 180 runs in the last game. He is the leading run-scorer for Sussex with 581 runs at an average of 58.1 - the second-best average after Pujara. Coles has also taken 5 wickets with the ball. Oliver Carter (510 runs) has 5 half-centuries in the middle. He will team up with FJ Hudson-Prentice (465 runs) in the middle.

The absence of Ollie Robinson hasn’t hurt much. Nathan McAndrew and the Greek pacer Aristides Karvelas have distributed the bowling load equally. McAndrew is the leading wicket-taker for Sussex with 29 wickets at an average of 24.17. Whereas, Karvelas has 24 wickets at 23.33.  Henry Shipley and Jack Carson will be adding the remaining firepower to the Sussex bowling attack.

Key Players: James Coles, Tom Alsop, Nathan McAndrew

Sussex Predicted Playing XI:

Weather Conditions

The weather will be mostly cloudy. The temperature will range between 12 and 19. The wind will be flowing from the west at 15-30 kmh. The rain is predicted on the first and the final day of the game. The pitch at Headingley offers a good balance between bat and ball, providing an exciting contest for both batsmen and bowlers. The surface at Headingley is typically known to have some grass cover, which assists the fast bowlers early on. The seamers can generate movement and bounce, making it challenging for batsmen, especially in the initial overs.

As the match progresses, the Headingley pitch tends to flatten out, making it easier for batsmen to score runs. The ball comes onto the bat nicely, allowing stroke-making opportunities. However, there is still assistance for the spinners as the game progresses.

Venue Details

The game between Yorkshire and Sussex will be played at The Headingley, Leeds between 19th to 23rd July from 3:30 pm onwards The venue has a capacity of 17000 spectators and has hosted 83 Tests, 47 ODIs & 1 T20I.

Toss: To Bowl

In the 83 Tests, the results have favoured teams chasing the target. The team chasing the target have won in the last 35 games. The team winning the toss should bowl first even though the average score of the first innings has always been better and the ground assists batters. In fact, the only result of the three games played here this season has come while chasing.

Though Yorkshire is struggling this season, they have been fantastic against Sussex in recent years. They have 3 wins and two draws in the last five games against Sussex. On the other hand, Sussex is unbeaten this year. They have a well-balanced batting and bowling unit.

Adam Lyth and Finley Bean will be the key players for Yorkshire. On the other hand, Sussex bowlers who have more wickets than the hosts could be the game-changers. With rain disturbance, the chances of the game ending without a result are high.

We predict that the match will be drawn.
