With all teams having opened their AFCON 2025 campaigns, action now shifts to Round Two, which gets underway on Friday as Angola face Zimbabwe at the Stade de Marrakech, with kickoff set for 6 PM IST.

Having stumbled in their opening fixtures, both Angola and Zimbabwe will view this clash as a golden chance to revive their campaigns. With qualification for the round of 16 still possible via the best third-place route, this shapes up as a must-win encounter for two sides desperate to stay alive in the tournament.

Current Standings: After losing their first match by a similar result (2-1), both teams are tied for third place in Group B.

Head-to-Head Record: Zimbabwe hold a slight edge in this rivalry with three wins to Angola’s two, and intriguingly, none of their previous meetings have ever ended in a draw.

Angola Preview

Angola’s hopes of emulating their quarter-final run from AFCON 2023 took an early hit with a 2–1 opening defeat to South Africa. The Palancas Negras matched the bronze medallists blow for blow—10 shots each, four on target—and even found an early equaliser through Mbekezeli’s early set-piece goal.

But costly defensive lapses proved decisive, as hesitation in the box handed Appolis time to punish them, while conceding 23 free-kicks only added to their woes. Coupled with blunt finishing despite dominating touches in the opposition area (23 to 14), it leaves Patrice Beaumelle with clear issues to fix before Friday’s must-win clash.

Much was expected of Cagliari forward Zito Luvumbo, but he was effectively kept in check by the South African defence. In contrast, captain Fredy led by example in midfield, registering an assist, creating a big chance, and completing two key passes while also testing the keeper. Defensive midfielder Show also stood out—his goal was the highlight, but his tireless running and physical presence, winning half of his duels, helped disrupt South Africa’s rhythm.

Angola Probable Starting Lineup - Hugo Marques ( GK); Clinton Mata, Gasper, Buatu, Carneiro, Fredy,  Maestro, Zito Luvumbo, Gelson Dala, Show, Nzola.

Zimbabwe Preview

Zimbabwe arrive in similar circumstances to Angola, having also opened with a 2–1 defeat, but the story of their loss was far harsher than the scoreline suggests. Egypt ran the show, limiting the Warriors to just 22% possession while unleashing 35 shots, 11 of them on target.

Against the run of play, Zimbabwe briefly stunned the Pharaohs when Prince Dube bundled home an early opener in the 20th minute, a rare bright moment in an otherwise one-sided contest. With limited attacking options, Zimbabwe know this game could hinge on a single goal—and they’ll be hoping it falls their way.

Zimbabwe avoided a heavier opening defeat largely thanks to 40-year-old Washington Arubi, whose nine saves kept the scoreline respectable. Once again, the Warriors will lean heavily on their veteran goalkeeper on Friday, while hoping Prince Dube and Macauley Bonne can deliver the decisive moment up front.

Zimbabwe Probable Starting Lineup - Washington Arubi (GK); Takwara, Hadebe,  Garananga, Godknows Murwira, Marvelous Nakamba, Fabisch, Jalai, Bonne, Msendami, Prince Dube.

With both sides desperate for three points, attacking intent will be key. On that count, Angola look far better equipped, while Zimbabwe remain fragile. The odds reflect that gap too, with bookmakers backing Angola at 1.70, compared to Zimbabwe’s 5.25, and a draw at 3.50.
