Argentina have been many people’s favourites to win the Qatar World Cup leading up to the start of the tournament.

Much of that is because of the brilliance of Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest player the sport has ever seen, however this is one of the strongest squads we’ve seen from Argentina in some time.

As Copa America champions, they are the most in-form of the South American nations, and you wouldn’t back against them from going deep into the tournament. All eyes will, of course, be on Messi as the competition progresses.

On the flip side, Saudi Arabia are the second-lowest ranked country participating at this year’s World Cup and are not expected to pull up any trees in their three group stage matches.

Every single player in their squad plays their club football in Saudi Arabia, meaning that they will lack the experience at the top of the game.

With Mexico and Poland, two experienced international teams, also in Group C, it’ll be extremely difficult for Saudi Arabia to progress.

Argentina Preview

FIFA Ranking: 3

Predicted Finish: Semi Finals

Reasons to be cheerful:

Leo Messi will give them a chance in any game they play

Are currently on a 35-match unbeaten run

Reasons to be fearful:

The pressure on La Albiceleste is always immense

May struggle defensively against the very best teams

When the action starts, no player will command more attention from fans around the world than Leo Messi.

Alongside Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi has been the standout player of his, and potentially any, generation. Many will be wishing that he wins the World Cup, the only trophy that has eluded him in his career.

By no means is this a one-man squad, however.

There is stardust sprinkled throughout, from top to bottom. Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez are sparkling for their respective clubs upfront, Angel Di Maria is enjoying an Indian summer later in his career and they have some solidarity at the back.

Where you fear they may struggle is up against an attack as good as theirs, perhaps from a Brazil or Germany. That shouldn’t trouble them against Saudi Arabia, however.

Star Man – Leo Messi

The little genius has 91 goals for Argentina, including 10 in his last six appearances. He enters this tournament in sparkling form and is, without doubt, crucial to his country’s hopes.

Saudi Arabia Preview

FIFA Ranking: 51

Predicted Finish: Group Stage

Reasons to be cheerful

This is their second-consecutive World Cup tournament

Earned five wins from their seven games in the final round of qualifying

Reasons to be fearful

     Have no international stars

A thrashing against Argentina could end their hopes from the outset

As the second-lowest ranked nation at the 2022 World Cup, nobody is expecting a great deal from Saudi Arabia, perhaps other than losing all three of their games.

With Poland and Mexico to come, both inside the world’s top 30, losing all three games is a distinct possibility. There is, of course, always the potential for a shock, but that is highly unlikely to come from this nation.

The one positive for the Saudis is that their players will be familiar with one another, all playing in the same domestic league. Thirteen of the squad are at Al-Hilal, for example.

In the opening game, anything can happen, and Saudi must try and stay in the game for as long as possible.

Star Man – Salem Al Dawsari

The 31-year-old winger has won almost every accolade available to him in Saudi Arabia and scored the winning goal as his country beat Egypt in the last World Cup.

     Argentina will boss possession

Expect a moment or two of genius from Messi and co.

Two or more goals in the game

In terms of world rankings, you rarely see a more one-sided contest than this at a World Cup.

Its 3rd playing 51st, and you feel that this could turn into a hammering if Argentina get themselves up and running quickly.

If Messi and co. are on song, this could be a very entertaining watch.
