The final quarter-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup sees defending champions Argentina take on a confident Switzerland at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday.

Despite facing 15 shots, Switzerland allowed only three on target, underlining the defensive discipline that has defined their campaign. They have conceded just three goals all tournament and are yet to let one in during the knockout stage. 

The shootout success was equally significant, as Switzerland had won just one of their previous five major tournament knockout matches that went to penalties, making this a major psychological boost. 

That newfound belief, coupled with their defensive solidity, will be crucial if they are to contain Lionel Messi and Argentina.

Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi have been central to Switzerland's run. Embolo has led the line superbly with two goals and two assists, while the 20-year-old Manzambi has emerged as a breakout star with three goals and two assists, becoming the youngest player since 1966 to register five goal contributions in a single World Cup. Ruben Vargas has also been influential with two goals and an assist. 

If Manzambi is unavailable and Vargas is not fully fit to start, Switzerland will once again depend on the defensive leadership of Manuel Akanji and shot stopping skills of Gregor Kobel, who impressed with three saves and a shootout stop in the previous match.
