Arsenal bounced back from recent cup disappointments with a crucial 2-1 victory over Tottenham. Despite the absence of key players like Jesus and Saka, the Gunners showcased their fighting spirit and dominated the North London derby. However, to maintain their title challenge, Arteta will need to strengthen his squad in the transfer market, particularly in attack.

Aston Villa ended their five-game losing streak away from home with a vital victory over Everton. Ollie Watkins' goal proved decisive, easing the pressure on the team. Emery's side faces a challenging period with upcoming fixtures against Arsenal and Monaco. A clean sheet away from home will boost their confidence as they aim to continue their push for Champions League qualification.

Head to Head Record: Both teams have played each other 59 times. Arsenal have won 32 games, Aston Villa have won 13, with 14 draws being played out.

Current Standings: The Gunners sit in 2nd with 43 points. Villa are in 7th with 35 points.

Arsenal FC Preview

Spanish boss Mikel Arteta confirmed to TNT Sports of his appetite to sign a striker in the January transfer window. The Gunners weaved past a sluggish Spurs in the London derby, courtesy to an own goal from Solanke and Trossard. But with 17 games more to play, Arsenal need a recognised striker with promise. Gabriel Jesus is out for the season with an ACL injury and Englishman Saka will still need a couple of months in the treatment room.

The Gunners are lucky to be supported by such a threatening centre-back in Gabriel. The Brazilian has been instrumental to Arsenal’s hopes this season, defending cleanly and attacking with intention during set-piece mastery by Nico Jover. With Eddie Nketiah having left, and Alexander Isak unavailable this time round, Arsenal are targeting Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon who comes with a hefty 70 million price tag. Dusan Vlahovic has also entered discussions with Juventus, no longer an Italian powerhouse in the Serie A.

Defence the best attack

The Gunners suffered at the start of the season, but a win over neighbours Spurs’ means they’re back in business. The Gunners have now done the double over Spurs for the fifth time. 3 have come under legendary Arsene Wenger, with the other 2 coming under current manager Mikel Arteta. Arsenal’s backline has proved its worth again with Myles Lewis-Skelly being the youngest Englishman to start this fixture. He also completed 30 out of 32 passes, showing Premier League maturity. Unfortunately Odegaard and Kai Havertz have been missing plenty of opportunities.

Injury - Saka, Tomiyasu, Jesus, Calafiori, Nwaneri and White are out.

Arsenal Probable XI - Raya (GK), Lewis-Skelly, Timber, Gabriel, Saliba (DEF), Odegaard, Rice, Partey (MID), Sterling, Havertz, Trossard (FWD).

Aston Villa FC Preview

Emery has been busy in the transfer window. The midlanders mean business, having their foot in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. As a result, reinforcements are needed. 25 year old Dutchman, Donyell Marlen joins Aston Villa from Borussia Dortmund for a 23 million euros fee with 3 million euros in add-ons. He helped the German club reach the finals of the Champions League last season, and also scored 13 goals in total. Marlen has 9 goals and 41 caps for the Netherlands and featured in the Euro 2024 Championship.

The young Dutchman has been the latest big name signing to grace the Premier League. But, where does he fit in the Emery system? Malen made a 10 minute cameo in last season’s Champions League final, but didn’t have the impact needed, as his side lost to Read Madrid at Wembley. This season, however, Malen scored and assisted against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Dortmund shocked Real Madrid at half-time, until they mounted a comeback and eventually won the game.

But Malen was instrumental for his side. The winger has electric pace that makes it hard for defenders to keep up. His agility is breath-taking. Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran will be adding way more goals to their tally. Both Dortmund managers Terzic and Nuri Sahin weren’t happy with the Dutchman’s defensive contribution. But, that shouldn’t be a problem for Dortmund’s 2023-24 leading goal scorer at Aston Villa, with Unai setting his team up compactly at the back.

Injury - Carlos, Torres, Barkley, McGinn, Philogene and Martinez are out.

Aston Villa Probable XI - Martinez (GK), Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne (DEF), Kamara, Onana, Rogers, Tielemans, Ramsey (MID), Watkins (FWD).

Arsenal host Aston Villa at the Emirates, aiming to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier league. The Gunners need to bolster their attack but remain a formidable force. Villa will push for a strong finish. A demanding schedule may impact both teams. Despite recent struggles in the FA and Carabao cup, Arsenal are favored to win at home.
