Despite their poor defeat against Everton last weekend, Arsenal remained five points clear of City at the top as their rivals also lost their game.

It means that the Gunners can move eight points clear with victory here, with City not playing until 48 hours later. It’s a big incentive for Mikel Arteta’s men to increase the gap ahead of their clash with Pep Guardiola’s men next week.

Arteta will have been displeased at how Everton outfought his Arsenal side at times, something that they had little response to. Here, they will expect a response.

Brentford, with four wins and two draws, have the league’s best record over the past six games. It’s a run which has pushed them up to 7th, just a point behind Brighton.

Thomas Frank’s men continue to tackle any challenge thrown at them and they know that they can give anyone a good game.

Arsenal FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Just one defeat from their last eight against Brentford at home

Gunners have won their last seven London derby games

Reasons to be fearful:

It was unlike Arsenal to be outplayed against Everton last week

More dropped points here would leave the door open for City

Arsenal will hope that their defeat to Everton was just a small blip in the course of a season, or whether it spells a dip in form that could put their leadership of the league in danger.

Back at home in this fixture, they will favour their chances at collecting their 17th win from 21 games and opening up an eight-point gap over City – at least until their Manchester rivals play two days later.

Arsenal host Pep Guardiola’s men next week in the first of two titanic clashes over the coming weeks. At the end of that game, the gap could be as large as 11 points, or City could be top of the league.

So much can change in the space of a week.

Here, the Gunners have a good record over Brentford. Indeed, they beat the Bees 3-0 in their first meeting this season, a rare defeat for Thomas Frank’s men at home.

Star Man – Eddie Nketiah

No one has scored more goals at the Emirates since the start of last season than Nketiah, who is relishing his role as Arsenal’s central striker. He has 13 goals in that period.

Brentford FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

No defeats in their last six league games

May be a good time to play the Gunners

Reasons to be fearful

Lost four of their last eight away to Arsenal

Were surprisingly poor in their 3-0 defeat to Gunners earlier this season

Brentford’s players certainly shouldn’t be overworked over the next couple of months.

The Bees have just one more fixture to contend with in the month of February, followed by only three in April. They will, however, have to squeeze in a postponed fixture against Manchester United at some point.

Their form has been nothing short of excellent since the Premier League restarted after the World Cup. Win their game in hand and they can go within three points of Spurs in 5th.

Brentford’s record against Arsenal has been less than encouraging, although they may feel that this is a good time to play the Gunners, who have just lost to Everton.

Star Man – Ivan Toney

Brentford’s top scorer, with 14 goals in his 21 appearances, has been on fire all season. Can he make Arsenal pay here?

Arsenal will expect majority of possession

Brentford will carry threat on the counter

Can Gunners rebound after Everton defeat?

At home, you would expect Arsenal to put on a strong performance to rebound quickly after their recent defeat to Everton.

More dropped points, however, would lead to greater questions asked of this Arsenal side and their title credentials. They will have one eye on their giant clash with Manchester City coming up this week.

Brentford will suit playing on the counterattack, but will need to be much better than they were in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
