Liverpool will be hoping that the International break has done them a world of good in terms of refocussing their efforts for the remainder of the season.

They will know more than anyone just how disappointing they have been this season, certainly since the start of the new calendar year, and have watched their aspirations of retaining last season’s title wash quickly away.

With nine games to go, can they eat up the five points between themselves and Chelsea in 4th place in order to at least claim Champions League football for next season? That’s debateable.

For all the press about how dreadful Arsenal’s season has been, they are at this point just four points behind Liverpool. 9th place is not where Gunners’ fans want to be for sure, but they have a good record against the big clubs this season, as shown by their win over Spurs before the break.

Arsenal FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWWLD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Came back brilliantly against West Ham before the break

Record over the big teams this season is positive

Reasons to be fearful:

Have gone 12 games without a clean sheet

Just three wins from their last nine league matches

Overall, this will certainly be a league season to forget for Arsenal and their fans. Should they finish in their current position, 9th, it’ll be their worst-ever finish to a Premier League season.

Their has been progress in the Europa League and, with the winner of that competition going into next season’s Champions League, could be the best chance of European football for Arsenal next season.

There’s no doubt that the Gunners have been much improved in the league of late. They are unbeaten in their last four, with only three defeats coming from their last 15 matches. It’s a run which has been boosted by good defending, rather than outstanding attacking.

Here, they could be without influential youngsters Saka and Smith Rowe through hamstring issues, though this could give the likes of Nicolas Pepe a chance to shine.

Star Man – Alexandre Lacazette

Has scored in Arsenal’s last two league games and is more trusted by his manager than Aubameyang right now.

Liverpool FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLLWW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Picked up confidence boosting wins in league and Europe before break

Firmino could be back available again after injury

Reasons to be fearful:

Have only won two of last 20 league games away to Arsenal

Huge game against Real Madrid in midweek

Liverpool have a mammoth task ahead of them if they are to secure a top four finish this season.

Their decline since the start of 2021 has been in stark contrast to their form of last season, and have been forced to watch as Manchester City have run away with their title.

They remain in the Champions League, where they’ll face legendary Real Madrid, but unless they win that competition, they face missing out on it next season.

Here, they’ll be able to welcome back Robert Firmino who has missed their last three matches through a knee injury, although several long-term absentees such as Henderson, Gomez and Van Dijk remain sidelined.

You’d think that this is a match they must win to stand any chance of making the top four now.

Star Man – Diogo Jota

Has grabbed a goal and an assist in his two games since returning from injury, and offers something different to Liverpool’s forward line.

Will be interesting to see which Arsenal turn up

Can Liverpool concentrate with Real in midweek?

Win could spur either of these sides to positive finish

Arsenal are definitely out of the top four race, and have been for some time, whereas Liverpool will still feel they can close the five point gap to Chelsea with nine games remaining.

This is a game which they must win in order to stand any chance of doing that. As we’ve seen from Arsenal this season, they can be excellent when at their best, but disappointing at other times, and it could be this which decides the fixture.

Liverpool are slight favourites here.

Liverpool to win 2-1
