Arsenal and Tottenham meet in North London derby with mouth-watering clash at the top
Arsenal to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: London, Emirates Stadium
Bet NowAs the international break ends, the Premier League begins once again and will run all the way through until the World Cup begins in November.
Our first clash is as tasty as they come, with Arsenal and Tottenham contesting what has become known as the North London derby. It rarely disappoints, with many memorable contests in recent times.
Arsenal will feel good about themselves coming into this one, sitting at the top of the league on 18 points, ahead of both Spurs and Manchester City by a point.
They put on a scintillating performance to beat Brentford in their final game before the break, so their confidence will be high.
Tottenham have continued to win games without necessarily looking as free flowing as Arsenal. It is that shift in mentality, given to them by manager Antonio Conte, that has turned them into a real force this season.
This should be a cracker.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won their past two home games against Spurs
Unbeaten in their last 11 at home against this opposition
Reasons to be fearful:
Always usually concede against Tottenham
Conte’s Spurs are a much harder side to play against these days
Following their defeat to Manchester United, Arsenal responded brilliantly by putting Brentford to the sword, winning 3-0 in what could have been a difficult game against a tough opponent.
Once again, Gabriel Jesus was fantastic, while England’s Saka provided two of the assists in that game. It was a response that showed the strength of character these players have under Mikel Arteta, and shows they will be challenging near the top at the end of the season.
They have a great record in the North London derby in recent years, coming out on top more often than not. In fact, they haven’t lost at the Emirates in their previous 11 meetings, which is a formidable statistic.
They will hope that no injury concerns present themselves after the international break, otherwise they will be confident of securing another victory will a fully fit squad.
Star Man – Gabriel Jesus
The Brazilian keeps going from strength to strength in an Arsenal shirt. He now has four goals this season, and will be fresh having missed out of the Brazil squad for the latest round of international fixtures.
Reasons to be cheerful
Have almost equalled Arsenal’s success this season
They will overtake the Gunners with a win here
Reasons to be fearful
Poor record against Arsenal away from home
Tough run of fixtures will test their squad to the limit
Spurs were the highest scoring team in the Premier League’s last round of fixtures, where Antonio Conte’s men put six past a sorry Leicester side, sitting firmly at the bottom of the table.
For all the talk of Spurs not always being easy on the eye, they were ruthless in cutting through the Foxes last time out.
They will face a different proposition against Arsenal, of course. Arteta’s side are well drilled and play with an intensity that makes them hard to cope with. The Gunners have also improved defensively this season.
Spurs have an excellent balance right now, with their forward players all getting in on the act in front of goal.
Son now has his first goals of the season after netting a hattrick against Leicester, while Richarlison has come into the mix with some strong performances of late.
It’ll be their toughest test so far, but the incentive is to go top of the table by beating their closest rivals.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Kane has 13 goals against the Gunners in 17 appearances, only scoring more against Leicester and Everton. He loves these derby games and knows that it means to the fans.
Should be an engaging contest
Arsenal have been excellent at home this season
Either Kane or Jesus to score
You wouldn’t bet against this being a high-scoring game. Four of the last six meetings between these two have ended with at least three goals being scored.
In Arsenal’s last six games, they’ve scored or conceded at least three times. Similarly, all of Spurs’ last four fixtures have had at least three goals in them.
North London derbies often bring out the best in these players, certainly going forward.
You would expect Arsenal to have the edge, playing at home and with the momentum really behind them, but Conte has pulled off spectacular results in the past.
