San Mamés is getting ready for a massive night. Athletic Club host Sporting CP in a game that could decide their European seasons. The Basque side are desperate to tighten up at home. Meanwhile, the visitors from Portugal will be looking to jump on that shaky defence with their usual attacking style. Expect a high-intensity battle under the Bilbao lights.

Athletic Club are counting on Guruzeta to be clinical. He has tucked away four goals from just 2.16 xG in six games. On the other side, Sporting CP are leaning on Suárez. He has the same goal count but has also chipped in with an assist and has a higher xG of 3.11 over seven games.

Current Standings: Sporting CP are currently in 10th place with 13 points. Athletic Club are much further down in 23rd, having picked up only eight points from seven games.

Head-to-head Stats: The history between these two is a total deadlock. Both clubs have won two games each out of four competitive European meetings. That said, Sporting CP did cruise to a 3-0 win when they met in a 2024 friendly.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

Athletic Club go into this big Champions League match against Sporting CP with a defensive record that will worry their fans. Looking at their seven European games so far, the Basque side have averaged exactly 1.00 goal per game. On the flip side, they are letting in a rough 1.57 goals every 90 minutes. That stat leaves them stuck in 23rd place on the table for now.

Their defensive struggles look even worse when you check their recent form. In their last five games across all competitions, the team have given up 15 goals. They did manage to score 10 themselves, but it’s been a wild ride. This run includes a messy 4-3 win over Cultural Leonesa and a tough 5-0 loss to Barcelona. It’s clear the squad is finding it hard to stay solid at the back.

Manager Ernesto Valverde has to find a way to fix these holes without some of his main players. It’s a real headache for his team selection. Red cards mean Alvarez and Jauregizar are definitely out, leaving the squad thin for such a massive game. On top of that, the injury list is still long.

Equiluz, Prados, Williams, and Sannadi are all still working back from serious knee and ligament injuries. They won’t be back until early February 2026 at the earliest. This means Athletic Club have a massive hill to climb, trying to get a result with a thinned-out roster and a defence that’s been leaking goals.

Athletic Club (3-4-2-1): Simon; Lekue, Vivian, Paredes; Gorosabel, Rego, Vesga, Boiro; Gomez, Navarro; Guruzeta

Sporting CP Preview

Sporting CP make the trip to the Basque Country, sitting in a good spot in 10th place. Their numbers suggest we’re almost certain to see goals when they play. In seven European matches this season, the Lisbon side have averaged a solid 2.0 goals per game.

They’ve hit the net 14 times and given up 9, which is about 1.29 goals conceded every 90 minutes. You can see that attacking spark in their recent form, too. The team have put away nine goals in their last five games while only letting in five. That run includes their big 2-1 win over PSG.

Even so, Borges is dealing with a very short bench for this trip. He’ll have to get creative with his starting eleven. The medical team confirmed that the main attackers, Ioannidis and Quenda, are out until mid-March with foot and ligament injuries.

That really hurts their options up front. The defence is also missing Quaresma, who is still getting over a skull fracture, and Blopa, who isn't expected back until late February. Because of this, Sporting CP will have to rely on their squad depth to keep their scoring up and grab points against Athletic Club.

Sporting CP (3-4-2-1): Silva; Reis, Inácio, Fresneda; Mangas, Araújo, Morita, Catamo; Trinção, Simões; Suárez

Sporting CP’s scoring power might be too much for the hosts here. They are putting away two goals a game in Europe, while the Athletic defence is giving up nearly 1.6. It looks like the visitors are on track for a 2-1 win. For anyone looking at the odds, "Over 2.5 Goals" seems like the smartest pick.
