The final game of the group stage is where the drama really happens – the first two games can be full of shocks and surprises, but the third is where nations’ fates are decided for good.

Denmark have failed to impress in this tournament. Many predicted that they could be a contender to go deep into the competition, although have so far looked pedestrian in attack and a little leaky at the back.

Their 0-0 draw in the opening game against Tunisia was a real missed opportunity for the Danes to set down a marker. While they pushed France hard at times in their 2-1 defeat, they just don’t have the same quality.

Australia, on the other hand, have been punchy and bold at their fifth World Cup on the bounce. They haven’t made it past the group stage at any of the last three, but they are in the driving seat to do so here.

It’s all at stake for these two.

Australia Preview

FIFA Ranking: 38

Predicted Finish: Group Stage

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have the points advantage over Denmark here

Only need a draw to progress unless Tunisia beat France

Reasons to be fearful:

Have only qualified for the knockout stages once before

Lost eight of their 11 meetings against European countries

Although Australia are in the driving seat against Denmark, they still have it all to do here.

The Danes will be determined not to be one of the biggest teams to exit the World Cup at the first hurdle, and you feel they’ll up their game considerably here.

Australia must continue in the same fashion that saw them take the lead against France and earn a win over Tunisia in their second game.

By being bold and taking the game to Denmark, they stand a better chance of getting a positive result. Their record against European nations is poor, but it only takes one moment of magic to turn a tie in their favour.

Here, they could field the same XI that beat Tunisia, although Ajdin Hrustic has been declared fit enough to start having come on as a substitute in their last game

Star Man – Mitchell Duke

It will have been one of the proudest moments of his life, to have scored a winning goal in a World Cup game against Tunisia. He’ll have his sights set on another moment or two of magic here.

Denmark Preview

FIFA Ranking: 10

Predicted Finish: Round of 16

Reasons to be cheerful

Have the players to get the win they need here

Christian Eriksen has been brilliant in midfield

Reasons to be fearful

Strikers appear to lack cutting edge

Failed to beat Australia at the 2018 World Cup

Denmark qualified for the knockout stages at the 2018 World Cup, but they face an uphill battle to do so again at this tournament.

Back in 2018, they could only manage a 1-1 draw in the group game against Australia, but they come into this one needing to go one better and collect three points.

Also, it’s not quite as simple as needing to win. As unlikely as it seems, if Tunisia beat France by a better goal difference than Denmark beat Australia, the Danes will still go out. That’s how finely balanced Group D is.

However, Denmark can only think about themselves, which includes improving upon their performances so far. They were better against France, and in fact scored to make it 1-1 in the second half.

That sort of spirit will be required here, along with a dose of quality upfront.

Star Man – Christian Eriksen

Has been Denmark’s best player so far in this tournament. The midfielder has created seven chances in his two games, five more than any other Denmark player.

     Denmark to edge possession

     Can they improve efficiency upfront?

Australia will attack fast on the break

Denmark haven’t made it easy for themselves with no wins from their opening two games, but they do still have their fate in their own hands (just about).

They will feel confident of getting the result they need to go through to the knockout stages for the second consecutive World Cup, but it’ll certainly be tense.

These teams don’t score a lot of goals, so it’ll be close come the end.
