Sunday’s game against Chelsea was a day to forget for Villa. Their talisman Ollie Watkins missed a great chance to take the lead. To add to those woes, Martinez was forced off with an injury. Who would’ve thought Villa would endure such an experience with the start they had. Unai Emery is currently enduring the longest winless run of his tenure at Villa, having not won in eight matches, since the 2-0 Champions League win over Bologna in October.

Combining Champions League demands with the domestic programme is not an easy one. We’ve previously seen this happen to Burnley, Newcastle and Leicester. Clubs playing in Europe after a long hiatus take time to settle into playing 2 fixtures a week. The midlanders will want to make a statement victory and start the month on a high and get their campaign back on track.

New Leicester boss Ruud’s first game would've made him proud of Schade’s hat-trick. Except for the fact that Schade was on the opposite team. The former Manchester United striker who took up the Leicester job has a mountain to climb. But this Brentford side have been blistering.

Right from the very start of the season when they scored goals within the first minute. They know how to find the net. The Bees enjoyed a fourth home win for the first time since 1937. The sale of Ivan Toney doesn’t seem to be affecting this team one bit. Last season’s 16th place finish is a matter of the past. Thomas Frank is a top manager who knows how to get the best out of every player. If the players can start getting results away from home, the Bees could enter some serious discussions.

Head to Head Record - Both teams have played 19 games. Villa have won 7, Brentford have won 4, with 8 games ending in a stalemate.

Current Standings - Aston Villa who were once part of the top 4 conversation are now languishing in 12th with 19 points. The Bees have steadied their horses and sit in 8th with 20 points. Only one point separates Aston Villa and Spurs who are in 7th. Such is the mid table tightness.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Emery’s boys need to pick up where they last left off. Aston Villa has undergone a recent slump. This is normal for teams that play in both Europe and their domestic league. Despite being winless in their previous eight (D4 L4), Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last four league games against Brentford (W2 D2). Both teams love playing attacking front foot football.

There has been just one clean sheet in the six Premier League meetings between Aston Villa and Brentford, with the Villans winning 4-0 in October 2022 under Aaron Danks. The issue with Villa, like Spurs, has been that of consistency. The team needs to adjust and adapt to different pressures. Unai Emery will be gutted about not keeping the momentum going. Part of that problem was also the International break. Despite that, not everything has been bad.

Aston Villa have lost just one of their last 11 Premier League home games (W4 D6), going down 2-0 against Arsenal in August. Each of their last three have finished level, with the Villans last drawing four consecutive Premier League games at Villa Park.

Watkins leads the way

Against Crystal Palace last time out, Ollie Watkins became the first Aston Villa player to reach 50 goal involvements in Premier League home games (35 goals, 15 assists). His 35 goals is the second most by a Villa player at Villa Park, behind only Dwight Yorke (37). Ollie Watkins needs to up his numbers so that he can carry the baton once Kane hangs up his boots. He has everything for a perfect No.9, strength, agility, bending his runs to perfection, link-up play. Registering a couple of goals against Brentford may help get Villa’s season up and underway.

Injury - Onana and Ramsey are out injured.

Aston Villa probable line up : Maatsen (GK), Digne, Torres, Konsa, Cash (DEF), Tielemans, Kamara, Philogene, Rogers, McGinn (MID), Watkins (FWD).

Brentford FC Preview

Brentford have never won an away league game against Aston Villa (D6 L3), with the Bees only facing Stoke (14) and Halifax Town (11) more often on the road without ever winning in their league history. But Thomas Frank will know that his team is currently on a formidable run. They have been scoring plenty of goals i.e. the most with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. If the Bees can keep things tight at the back, who knows maybe they can dream of Europe.

Brentford have lost nine of their last 10 Premier League games against sides that finished in the top four the previous season, with the only exception being a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in March. Games like things are where characters are made. Players will want to take responsibility and secure at least a point since no side has won fewer points on the road than the Bees this term (1, level with Southampton). Conversely, the Bees have won more points in Premier League home games than any other side this season (19).

Player to watch out for

Brentford’s Kevin Schade became the fourth German player to score a Premier League hat-trick last time out against Leicester, with his three goals in that game more than he’d managed in his previous 41 appearances in the competition combined (2).

Injury - Henry, Hickey, DaSilva, Nunes, Ajer are all out.

Brentford probable line up : Flekken (GK), van den Berg, Collins, Lewis-Potter, Pinnock (DEF), Norgaard, Jensen, Mbeumo, Damsgaard, Schade (MID) Wissa (FWD).

Brentford's away form is abysmal but take nothing away from how lethal Thomas Frank’s side can be. If you have a porous defense the last team you want to face apart from Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea is Brentford.

Mbeumo, Wissa and Schade are on a rampant run, blasting in goals. Unai Emery is experiencing something similar to Pep Guardiola. His team started the season well but have gone slightly wobbly. He’ll need his senior players to steady the ship and set the sails in motion. Ollie Watkins could haunt his old team with his incredible runs. But it’s difficult looking past a draw.
