The situation is getting steadily worse for Aston Villa and the longer they go without a win, the pressure will continue to pile on Steven Gerrard’s shoulders.

Villa sit two points off the bottom of the table courtesy of their single win of the season so far, which came against fellow strugglers Everton.

Much has also been made of the style of play of Villa’s recent performances. Fans have taken to social media to express their frustrations at what they consider boring and non-progressive football at Villa Park.

Things don’t get any easier for them here against the English champions.

City continue to look as impressive as ever and are scoring goals for fun right now. Top striker, Erling Haaland, has shot his way to the top of the scoring charts and will put many teams to the sword this season.

On paper, there is only one winner here.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

New signings Dendoncker and Bednarek could come into the side

Played well in their two defeats to City last season

Reasons to be fearful:

Villa have won just three of their last 16 league games

Style of football has been poor recently

Aston Villa made a couple of signings on transfer deadline day in Jan Bednarek on loan from Southampton and Leo Dendoncker in a permanent move from Wolves.

Neither side will get fans off their seats, but they could be the solid personalities to help lift the club out of their current troubles.

In truth, Villa fans will take any sort of improvement right now, especially with almost no hope against the reigning Premier League champions.

The form has been poor, the performances have been even worse and a heavy defeat here could destroy confidence completely.

In their two games last season, both won by Manchester City, Villa actually played well and only lost by a narrow margin.

They will hope for something similar here.

Star Man – John McGinn

Against City, in a game where Villa won’t have too much of the ball, the midfielders are key in terms of keeping the ball when they have the chance and giving it quickly to the forward players. Villa’s captain needs a big game.

Manchester City FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Erling Haaland looks in unstoppable form

Exceptional record over Villa in recent years

Reasons to be fearful

Will need to prepare themselves for a Villa response

Defensive injuries could lead to a lapse in concentration

There aren’t many weaknesses to this City team right now, despite the fact that they are two points off the top of the table after drawing one of their five games.

We’ve all seen how Erling Haaland has dominated the Premier League since his summer arrival, but what of the other players?

Well, Julián Álvarez was in sparkling form in the 6-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest in midweek, scoring twice and looking like a fine young player.

The supporting cast of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden rarely fail to impress either.

City do have one or two injuries in defence to deal with, but with the way in which they keep the ball, they may not face too many difficulties against Villa.

Star Man – Erling Haaland

With nine goals in his first five games, what more is there to say about the Norwegian powerhouse? He could break all records if he stays fit this season.

     Manchester City will dominate possession

If they score early, Villa heads will drop

Villa must look to stay in the game as long as possible

We saw in the Leicester vs. Manchester United game in midweek just how low on confidence the home side were, looking every bit like a bottom-placed side.

Villa are only one place above them in the table and it’ll be interesting to see how they respond to all the negative press written about them recently.

They will be looking to make a statement, but that will be incredibly difficult against this City side, who are full of confidence and goals.

If City score early, this could get nasty for Villa.
