Aston Villa searching for rare win under Gerrard against up-and-down Southampton
Aston Villa to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Birmingham, Villa Park
Bet NowAston Villa secured a positive result against Manchester City in their last game, coming from behind to earn a draw.
Villa are still looking far from their best, however. With just one win and one draw from their six games, they sit in 17th place.
They will need to provide their home fans with a win at some point, and you feel that this could be a strong opportunity to do so.
Wins have also been hard to come by for Southampton fans of late.
Indeed, their team has registered three wins from their last 18 games, stretching back to March last season. It’s a run that has seen Southampton languish in the bottom half of the Premier League, never far above the danger zone.
They sit 12th currently, with two wins to their name this season. They are unlikely to make a push for the top half of the league unless they can play with better consistency.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Point against Manchester City should raise their confidence
Southampton is Coutinho’s favourite opponent
Reasons to be fearful:
Just one win from their last 10 league games
Can they replicate their intensity from the Man City game?
We so it so often from teams in the lower half of the table.
They are able to raise their game against the so-called bigger teams in the division, playing their socks off against better opponents, only to fall back and play poorly against teams around them at the bottom.
Steven Gerrard will hope that isn’t the case from his Aston Villa side this weekend, although his players must prove that they have turned a corner from their poor form so far this season.
At home to Southampton, Villa’s players will feel they should improve upon their last result and claim three points. While the Saints play some good football, the home support should encourage the Villains.
A win here would do Gerrard’s team the world of confidence. A defeat would set them back to square one and invite more pressure on his shoulders.
They won this fixture 4-0 in last season’s meeting.
Star Man – Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho is due a big performance in a Villa shirt, having blown hot and cold for a while. Southampton is his favourite team to play against, having scored five goals and provided two assists in the past.
Reasons to be cheerful
Southampton had enough chances to take points against Wolves in their last game
Have the historical edge over Villa (16 wins vs. Villa’s 15)
Reasons to be fearful
Missed chances up front are hurting them
Have conceded the first goal in all of their last five games
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men continue to play some good football without being ruthless enough in front of goal. Only five teams in the league have scored fewer goals than the Saints so far.
The Saints played well against Manchester United, although eventually lost 1-0, before going on to beat Chelsea in one of Thomas Tuchel’s last games as manager.
They have the foundations of a very good team, but without more consistency, they will always struggle to rise above a lower midtable team.
Their new signings could make a difference in that area, with four players joining at the end of the transfer window.
Maitland-Niles, Caleta-Car, Larios and Edozie add much-needed strength in depth for the Saints, though it remains to be seen how they’ll find more goals going forward.
Can they cope with the pressure of Villa park?
Star Man – Che Adams
The Scottish forward continues to get into the right areas at the top of the pitch, but his finishing has let him down so far this season. If he becomes more ruthless in front of goal, Southampton will feel the benefit.
Villa’s home support should see them on top
Southampton have enough firepower to create chances
A win for either side would be massive
In their last home game, Villa produced a battling display to claim a point against Manchester City.
That spirit against the champions will do them good if they can replicate that throughout the season. Starting here, their home fans would love to see the same intensity from their players.
Southampton have qualities of their own, of course. Their new signings should bed in and improve them across the pitch. They must start to take their chances, however.
