Aston Villa and West Brom meet in what should be an interesting derby game, with both sides working hard but ultimately falling below the positions they would like to be in.

Villa have suffered badly without their injured captain, Jack Grealish, who has missed the last nine league games with a shinbone issue. They’ve seen their ambition of finishing in a European position fall away over the past couple of months, and they will be hard-pressed to finish in the top half at this rate.

That said, they have some good players and have always been competitive even when not at their best.

West Brom have won two and drawn one of their last five games, but unfortunately for them their revival has come too late to salvage anything from what has overall been a poor season.

Those two wins against Southampton and Chelsea have showcased the qualities they have going forward, however time and time again they have been too open at the back.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DLWLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Striker Wesley could be fit for the first time in over a year

Beat West Brom earlier in the season

Reasons to be fearful:

Have only won one of their last five home games

Cash, Grealish and Trezeguet are all out here

Aston Villa have been playing decent football recently, despite not picking up the points they were earlier in the season.

They gave Manchester City a good game in their last fixture, and even though they eventually ended up on the losing side, will take plenty of positives into this game.

Unfortunately for Aston Villa, it is who is missing from this game which could have the deciding factor. They’ve only won two of the nine games which Grealish has missed, and now right back Matty Cash will miss out after being sent off against City.

With the likes of Leeds performing well right now, Villa face a tough test in order to reclaim a top half spot. They know three points here would help them on their way to that.

Star Man – Ollie Watkins

Has scored consistently for Villa this season, and has 14 goals to his name.

West Bromwich Albion FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DLWWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Seven points from last five games

A derby clash could bring out the best in them

Reasons to be fearful:

Only three teams across Europe’s top leagues have conceded more goals

Failed to score in four of the last five away games

As we’ve said in many derby games this season, form often goes out of the window and teams which have been struggling can sometimes play better than their position suggests.

West Brom have almost certainly left it too late in the day to cause a shock and survive this season, however they are more than capable of winning games of football, as both Chelsea and Southampton have found out recently.

Should they win here, they’ll go level on points with 18th place Fulham, though still at least six points off safety.

There are no new injury concerns for Sam Allardyce here, and he will have prepare his squad to go for the win against Villa. He is looking for his 10th win over them in his managerial career.

Star Man – Matheus Pereira

The Baggies’ top scorer with nine goals, including three in his last three.

Aston Villa have the better team

However, West Brom are in better form

     Should be a high-energy encounter

This has been a fixture which Aston Villa have dominated over the years, losing just four of the 21 league meetings.

That, coupled with a superior squad and higher league position, should mean that Villa are favourites here, but West Brom have been in good form recently.

It would be surprising it West Brom win, but it wouldn’t be the biggest shock of the season.
