Not only is this game a derby between two neighbours in England’s West Midlands, it’s also a match between two managers who know each other extremely well.

So well, in fact, that they’ve already faced each other this season. Unai Emery left Villareal for the Aston Villa job shortly after Lopetegui parted company with Sevilla.

Aston Villa have found life much better under Emery so far, winning three of their four league games including against Manchester United and Tottenham.

They will now have the top half in their sights and on this form, you wouldn’t bet against them achieving it this season.

Wolves remain in 19th place, but have shown plenty of spirit and renewed organisation under Lopetegui. The Spanish manager has instilled an intensity in their play that will serve them well this season.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Three wins from their last four in the league – United & Spurs included

Often start games with a bang – 1/3 of their goals in first 15 minutes

Reasons to be fearful:

Haven’t won any of their last six home games against Wolves

Lost their last two against the Wanderers

After the inconsistency, and sometimes old-fashioned football, under Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa can finally look forward to a brighter future under Unai Emery.

The Spaniard has won multiple titles across Europe and knows how to get the best out of his players. Although he didn’t succeed at Arsenal, that’s been the one blip on his otherwise stellar career so far.

His first game in charge saw a well-deserved victory over Manchester United, which has set Villa up perfectly for the remainder of the season.

They were superb against Tottenham in their last game, running Antonio Conte’s team ragged at times.

Emery’s concern will be to turn around their poor form against Wolves, with Villa winless from their last six meetings. Emery himself failed to win on three occasions as Arsenal manager against the Wanderers.

Here, Villa will assess the fitness of McGinn, Luiz and Konsa, who all came off against Spurs. Emi Martinez is likely to start his first game after returning from the World Cup.

Star Man – Ollie Watkins

Watkins has seen a new lease of life under Unai Emery and has at least one goal in each of his last three home appearances. His pace and power were excellent assets in Villa’s recent win over Spurs.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Great record against Villa

Earned four points from their last six available away from home

Reasons to be fearful

Just one win from their last 13 away games

Only one clean sheet from their eight games away from home this season

Julen Lopetegui will have been pleased with what he has seen from his first three games in charge.

Two of them have been victories, while in the third he watched Wolves push Manchester United until the very end despite eventually losing the game.

His main concern will be scoring enough goals to lift them out of the danger zone. They remain the lowest scorers in the division and must make new signings in order to help in that area.

Matheus Cunha has been brought in on a loan deal this month, but the Brazilian has seven goals from his 54 appearances for Atletico Madrid. Not exactly setting the world alight with those numbers.

Wolves are looking a more solid team, it has to be said, and they have a strong record over Villa in recent seasons.

Star Man – Ruben Neves

Neves isn’t likely to help with Wolves’ scoring concerns, unless it’s from a set piece, although his passing and command of the midfield is essential to the team. He’ll be up against Villa’s confident midfield here though.

     Midfield battle will be intense

Both teams have pacey wingers that can cause problems

Managers to cancel each other out

Unai Emery and Julen Lopetegui will become the first managers to face each other in both La Liga and the Premier League in the same season.

Given that they won’t want to be shown up by the other, they could look to cancel each other out with their tactics here.

With the strength of their midfielders, this is a game that is likely to be settled by quick play in the middle and accurate passing to the wingers.

A draw could be the most probable outcome.
