FC BARCELONA vs FC BAYERN MUNICH Match Preview & Analysis

On the last two occasions, Barcelona and Bayern met each other in the Champions League, the winner has gone on to lift the trophy. Such in the enduring quality of these two teams over the past decade, they are always among the favourites for the tournament.

This time, it is Bayern Munich who is in the form of their lives and arguably favourites to see off their opponents.

Their success has been well-documented this season – they are currently on a whopping 19-match winning run in all competitions, and their star striker, Robert Lewandowski, is probably the best player in the world at present.

As for Barcelona, their challenges are equally well known. Manager Quique Setien undoubtedly saved his job by beating Napoli the other night (for now at least), with their slow and predictable style of play coming under fire from critics.

When you have Leo Messi, however, you still have a chance.

Form Guide (all comps.): W W L W W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Played well in the first half against Napoli
  • Welcome back key midfielders Busquets and Vidal from suspension

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Often fragile at the back
  • Unless Messi plays well, they have struggled this season

Barcelona fans will take hope from their recent history against the German champions. Messi produced one of the past decade’s greatest moments in 2015 – leaving Jerome Boateng on his backside before lobbing the world’s greatest goalkeeper with his ‘weak’ right foot. It remains to this day an iconic moment.

But the Catalans are a far-cry away from that quality.

Messi remains, but with Neymar now at PSG, and Luis Suarez, not quite the player he was, Barca have struggled in the big European games since they lifted the trophy five years ago.

They have not had a terrible season, despite finishing second in La Liga behind Real Madrid. They finished top of their CL group, ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan, and looked good in bursts against Napoli. But teams know if they can keep Messi quiet, they have a good chance of success.

They will need top performances from the likes of Griezmann and Suarez on Friday night, as well as Messi, to stand a chance against the mighty Bayern.

Star Man – Leo Messi

No one else carries their team like the little Magician. He ran the show in the first half against Napoli but needs more help from his teammates against Bayern.

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Arguably the favourites to lift the trophy
  • In blistering form – winning their last 19 matches

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Will be wary of Messi magic
  • A one-off knockout game can often cause a shock

On paper, there appears to be no stopping Bayern right now. The purple patch of form they find themselves in has seen them despatch their previous 19 opponents, scoring 57 goals and only conceding 13.

Having only been the permanent manager since December, Hansi Flick has done a remarkable job in taking the Germans to the next level, keeping experienced stars like Lewandowski and Muller happy while giving youth an opportunity. 19-year-old left-back Alphonso Davies has become a sensation this season.

They’re in a great place currently, something which their opponents cannot claim. But in a one-off knockout fixture, they’ll be aware that anything can happen. Many favourites have bitten the dust in the past. Especially when their opponents have Leo Messi.

Star Man – Robert Lewandowski

The Pole will be licking his lips at facing Barca’s brittle defence. Bayern’s dynamic play suits him perfectly and the striker has proved season after season how good he is at scoring every type of goal.

  • A fascinating encounter, with both sides looking to dominate possession
  • Star forwards will get chances, but Bayern’s better defence could be the difference
  • Both Messi and Lewandowski to score

European ties do not come any bigger than this. Two genuine heavyweights going toe-to-toe for a place in the Semi-Finals. Goals are expected. In the last four matches against each other, 15 goals have been scored.

Barcelona will rely on Messi to either score or assist, while Bayern has a whole host of stars who can take their opponents apart. Expect Bayern to come out on top on this occasion, but the beauty of a knockout situation means you never know for sure.
