Bengaluru will be hopeful that the recent win over East Bengal changes fortunes for the team which has had a difficult start to the season with back-to-back losses.

Goa have managed three consecutive victories to come up with a 100% record. Goa are second in the standings even if it is early days in the new campaign.

Despite the underwhelming start, Bengaluru are likely to be quite confident about a positive result against Goa, who have not enjoyed a victory in this fixture since 2021. At the same time, Bengaluru have managed back-to-back victories over Goa – including a 3-1 success on the same ground last season.

Bengaluru coach Simon Grayson has never suffered a defeat against FC Goa in his coaching days. However, he has lost twice to Manolo Márquez. Since his appointment in June, Manolo Márquez has enjoyed a fine run in the Indian Super League and he has lost only once at the hands of Bengaluru.

Bengaluru FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

  • Just picked up the first win of the season
  • A solid comeback to beat East Bengal

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Conceded the opening goal in all three league matches
  • Yet to score from open play in the first half

Bengaluru enjoyed a strong finish to the 2022 Indian Super League campaign with a string of victories. However, the team has begun the new season with plenty of disappointments already after the losses against Kerala Blasters and Mohun Bagan.

The team has scored from open play only twice in the three matches. Bengaluru are also looking for their first clean sheet of the season after conceding in all three games.

Sunil Chhetri has been Bengaluru’s best player so far this season but he has not been anywhere near his very best. The 39-year-old scored from the spot to hand Bengaluru the equaliser against East Bengal.

Star man – Sunil Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri picked up his first goal of the season in the win over East Bengal. The 39-year-old has done quite well against FC Goa in the past with five goals in 14 outings. The record looks considerably better in recent times with three goals in his last six games against FC Goa.

FC Goa Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

  • Three victories on the bounce
  • One of the two teams in the ISL with a 100% record after just three matches

Reasons to be fearful

  • Failing to keep a clean sheet in back-to-back matches
  • Summer signing Carlos Martinez has failed to score in the last two matches after scoring in the opener against Punjab

FC Goa have been able to put behind a disappointing 2022-23 season by making a brilliant start to the current campaign. However, the big test for the team starts with back-to-back away games against Bengaluru and Chennaiyin.

Manolo Márquez will be delighted with the positive start made to the campaign. The 55-year-old coach will be under pressure to get the club’s first away clean sheet since October 2022. Goa have not kept a clean sheet in nine consecutive away games in the ISL.

Goa have recently struggled in this fixture with no wins in the last three outings against Bengaluru. One area of concern for the league’s second-placed outfit will be the fightback required after watching the opposition take the lead in back-to-back games.

Star man – Noah Sadaoui

Noah Sadaoui has been Goa’s best player over the first three matches even if Carlos Martinez scored within the first half after making his debut. Sadaoui came up with two goals in an impressive performance against Odisha.

Bengaluru have a very good head-to-head record against Goa. The recent success over East Bengal is likely to put the hosts in a good frame of mind coming into the match. Goa might have registered three successive wins, but they are far from perfect.

If Bengaluru get an early lead, they have an excellent opportunity to make it three successive wins against this opponent – especially with home advantage.
