European chasing clubs Brighton and Brentford do battle in exciting clash
Brighton to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brighton and Hove, Amex Stadium
Brighton and Brentford have been two of the best teams so far this season, not only in terms of their results, but also for the way that they play.
They are also two of the smallest clubs in the league, in terms of spending power at least, so to see them thriving is a joy to behold.
Brighton are in pole position to claim a European spot this season, especially with a game in hand over Liverpool and Newcastle and three over Tottenham in 4th.
They would leapfrog two of those three teams if they could win their games in hand, which makes this game even more important for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.
The Seagulls also have an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United to look forward to in the coming weeks.
Brentford have become many people’s second favourite team this season, earning praise for their style and organisation. They’ll give Brighton a good game here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Flying high in both the league and FA Cup
Won four of their past five home league games
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost against Brentford earlier in the season
Don’t have a quality goalscorer like Brentford
Brighton have already had an excellent season but it could get even better as they face an important final couple of months.
With much to play for the in the league, and the opportunity of catching the teams above them, Brighton can’t afford to take their foot off the pedal just yet.
The Seagulls also have the chance to reach an FA Cup final, although they’ll face Manchester United for the right to do so later on this month.
One concern would be that these extra cup games are stretching their small squad a little thin – can they keep up their intensity over the next 12 or so games?
Star Man – Kaoru Mitoma
Scored a beauty in Brighton’s FA Cup win over Grimsby recently and has helped to transform his team’s season. He can create havoc on that left wing.
Reasons to be cheerful
Beat Brighton earlier in the season
Ivan Toney’s incredible form continues
Reasons to be fearful
Brighton are so difficult to play against at home
Have Manchester United and Newcastle coming up
Brentford, alongside Brighton, are one of the success stories of the season.
Like their opponents, they have played some excellent football, been very hard to beat and are very organised and well-drilled. Unlike Brighton, they have an outstanding goalscorer who has led their charge from the front.
Ivan Toney has been the exceptional number nine for Brentford this season, and they will miss him when he is eventually banned for betting offences. Until then, he seems to be playing like he’s making up for lost time.
The Bees are in danger of dropping a little and a European spot looks a little further away than it once did. They also have a tough run of fixtures, with Brighton then followed by Manchester United and Newcastle.
Star Man – Ivan Toney
Has 17 goals this season, including eight away from home. Only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland have scored more away from home this season.
Will be an entertaining clash
Expect goal-mouth action at both ends
Should be a tight game
Brighton against Brentford will be one of the most entertaining games this weekend, there’s no doubt about that.
They have both played exceptionally this season and have a chance of securing a European spot for next year.
Neither team loses very often, but at home you would expect Brighton to pull out all the stops and take the game to Brentford.
Both teams are likely to score, but Brighton may have the upper hand.
